About a year ago I bought knife off Ebay from a guy named Tim Hartman. It was a deal, a little heavier than I expected, but very well made and actually way more than I expected. Sharp too; it drew blood right away.
I sent it out to have it engraved, and then showed the results to Tim. He's a part time maker, and doesn't do a lot of marketing, so I thought he'd be interested in a little "upgrading" of the piece. As far as we know it was the first of his knives ever to be engraved.
Tim and I talked off and on for a while, and he showed me photos of his version of a Loveless drop point hunter; a style I admire.
Despite all the trouble in the economy and everything, this has been a good year for me and my family overall. So, trying to plan ahead, I asked him to build me a set of knives to that pattern, with the intention of using them as Christmas presents for my brothers.
The steel is Crucibles CPM 154, the bolsters were specified stainless also, the mastadon Ivory took a little sourcing, and we spent a fair amount of time working with these over the spring and summer. When they finally arrived I was very happy, and following through with the other part of my plan sent them off to Ron Nott to add some scrollwork and gold inlay.
Tim knew I was going to do the engraving, but not much more. He was interested in seeing the final results, and so when they came back from Ron I knew I needed to get a good picture. Besides, since my family's scattered all over the odds are pretty small they'll ever be together again.
Coop did the pic, Tim's very happy, Ron likes the results, and I can't wait to hear from my brothers.
