Came in today's mail. Knife was ordered a while ago. See the thread in the "Good, Bad and the Ugly" and come up with your own opinion about the deal.

The knife itself is drop dead gorgeous. Blade is 6" of forged W2, perfectly flat ground with a super nice, visible hamon. Guard and buttcap are nickel silver with a few red spacers at the guard. Stag is a carver that cost me a pretty penny.

Holy Crap! I guess it did not matter that you did not mentionhis name at GBU...

Danbo, your not going to use that thing are you?

If YES, *OUCH!*...

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet !

That is one of the nicest pieces of stag I have seen. I realize that you supplied it yourself. Excellent workmanship. One of the nicest camp knives I have seen. Love the temper line.

Dan-

Gorgeous knife. I really like Tim's work, I always have.

I like W2, and that hamon is great. It's too bad people aren't more familiar with W1 and W2, they are great steels that don't have a lot of alloys in there taking up space. I just ordered quite a bit of black diamond W1 from Crucible.

And of course a great choice with your stag Dan.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing!
Nick

Looks like a 600$ knife to me........ :D

And of course if you supplied the stag maybe knock 50$ off.... ;)

I hope everything is smooth

Do you know if W2 can be found anywhere nowadays, Nick? I read on Don Fogg's site that it's not produced anymore...

Happy Birthday, Danbo!

That is one awesome camp knife. I do like the way the stag turned out (I'll admit, I was a bit worried when you told me what had been done to it) and the pieces all appear to fit together real nicely too.

The grind also looks about as good as they come. Many newer makers wouldn't be able to grind like that if they had a bottle full of quaaludes and a grinding jig.

So today is Danbo's birthday (Thanks Wulf).
Looks like a great present to me!

I also have to chime in here with a "Damn, that is a NICE-lookin' knife"!. I think that you have made a nice investment.

Nice Knife! Great temper line. Looks like a keeper. Do you have a sheath for it yet? Maybe Kenny Rowe or Tree Stump Leather. I could see a dark brown sheath with basket weave tooling.

No sheath yet(other than the simple frog sheath that came with it), and I am still deciding whether or not to keep the knife.

Well, dammit. Danbo has very similar tastes to mine, and so he continues to torture and taunt me with his new pieces.

Sigh... a new mortgage in my future, and my collection stagnates...

Here is the GB&U link.

Danbo, glad you got the knife. As I read through your post, I couldn't help but remember some advice Les gave me years ago re: certain makers, payments, time frames, etc. As I read down the thread, I was glad to see that Les chimed into your GB&U thread with some interesting advice. I think he's right on. The "third person" phrasing in his suggested telephone conversation is funny and probably effective ... especially if you don't want to buy from Potier again.

Potier is a fine maker, for the most part. Too bad his sense of ethics borders errs heavily on the side of wheeler/dealer/sheister in lieu of honorable.

Thanks for both posts. I've learned something about purchasing custom knives.

Hey Danbo,

Again, are you sure this is W2? I thought W2 was not produced anymore. If it is could someone tell me where it can be found?

Thanks,

JD

Very nice knife. W2 is hard to find, but Tim had some when i talked with him years ago. I purchased the last that TX knifemakers had, unfortunately i do not have any more.

I just read the GB&U link Dando. Sorry to hear that such a nice knife was tainted by a bad experience with its' maker. Sometimes victory comes from moving on as if the negative event never took place. Just my two cents worth... I'll be sending a bill! :)
