Starting to practice crawling. My neck
is killing me. I'm doing a high crawl on hands and knees. My eyes look straight down. When I lift my head to look where I'm going, in no time at all my neck becomes tired. Is there a solution other than more practice?

Take care,

Well Bug,
My DI used to give me this little tidbit of advice while I was low or high crawling and it began to hurt. JUST KEEP CRAWLING MAGGOT!!!!
He was right on the money. After a while, the muscles that I used became conditioned to the action and it stopped bothering me.

Recondoc1 is right. We used plastic milk jugs with a length of 1 inch tubular webbing through the handle as a way to toughen the muscles. Just add a pint (16 oz) or so of water to a 1 gallon plastic milk jug (the kind with a plastic handle) and pass the web through the handle. Fashion a loop that fits behind your head and holds the jug suspended below your face when you lean over.

Sit down. Put your elbows on you knees for support. Spread your knees and hang the jug. Now do head lifts (like curls). Don't add much weight or do many reps. 10 or so a day is fine till you get used to it. It will seem VERY easy but don't be fooled. Wait till the next day. As you get stronger, add more weight and increase the reps. Do NOT try to lift heavy weights in this way as it can damage your vertabra. If you go slow, in a couple of weeks holding your head up while crawling will be no effort at all. Keep doing it and your neck will disappear :)

BTW... When holding your head up is no longer an effort... Quit doing the exercises.

I had a friend who did three sets. thirty reps in a set, with 75 lbs. He couldn't turn his head but he could head butt a horse ;)

I used to do some work for an orthopedic surgeon who did neck surgery and rehab. To build strength in the muscles at the back of the neck, he would have patients simply lace their fingers behind their head and use their arms to generate some resistance. As noted above, start off gently.

For strengthening the muscles along the sides of the neck to the top of the shoulder, he would have patients place their palm against their temple and generate resistance in that manner. I tried it and it worked fine.
