The latest from Timberline/GATCO - custom designed folders designed by Butch Vallotton. Currently available from your favorite knife dealer.

The top knife is the Discovery Lock which features a cam-assisted opening action similar to the Kershaw Onion Speed Safe. It has a stronger kick than the Speed Safes do and the DL sounds a lot like an auto when it is fired. Handles are of anodized T6-6061 aluminum, blades are of AUS-8 stainless. Pocket clip carries knife in tip down position. My only complaint about the DL is that they could have taken a bit more time to radius the edges of the handle scales more, as there are harsh corners and you can feel them as you grip the handle tightly.

Here are some shots of the Discovery Lock itself:

Upclose of the Discovery Lock, blade is in the open and locked position. The lockbar is butted right up against the lock release button. Sliding the button forward pushes the lockbar into the start of the arc on the cam, allowing the blade to close. Note - the scale on the other side conceals the spring in which tension is exerted on the lockbar.

The blade in the half open position (held open by toothpick). You can see the actual lockbar better in this shot. Note the little protruding "lobe" at the base of the cam. This is the detent that holds the blade closed.

Closed - the lockbar is held in this position by that aforementioned lobe, therefore securing the blade in the closed position.

The bottom knife is simply called the Vallotton Side Lock. The overall design bascially is his Chameleon folder (which was produced at one point in time by MicroTech as a D/A). Timberline's manual version is made of same materials as the Discovery Lock - AUS-8 blade, T6-6061 handle scales. The addition of the textured Kraton inlays make this knife comfortable to hold. The handles also have a rounded profile so your hand has really good contact with the Kraton. Pocket clip to carry the knife tip up. This one would make a great work knife - simple design, very straight forward and well executed.

Both the Discovery Lock and Vallotton Side Lock are both made in Taiwan and have the same bang-for-the-buck factor that the CRKT stuff is famous for. The knives retail for $89.99 and $49.99 repectively.
