Timberline Worden and CRKT KFF

Who else thinks that Timberline and CRKT must be using the same Taiwanese contractor for these two knives? Just received the Worden today and I'm struck by how similar they are in workmanship, materials, and construction. The edges of the liners on the Worden are finished a bit rougher than the KFF's and there is a slight edge grind imperfection at the very tip on the right. They also need to move the thumb stude back a little for better leverage. The zytel scales are smoother and the star sockets on the screws holding everything together are mucg cleaner. Sad to say, just like the KFF, the Worden won't withstand even a moderate spine whack to a padded surface. But at least the KFF has the LAWKS to take care of the problem - if you remember to engage it! Why the hell didn't they springload the LAWKS and keep it under tension so that it automatically engages when the blade opens? Anyway, due to its length and balance the Worden feels lighter and the handle is even more comfortable than the KFF. I'd say the Worden's about half an inch longer overall but the the cutting edges are about the same length. Now if I can just figure how to install a springloaded LAWKS I'd have the perfect folding fighter.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are using the same contractor. I have even mentioned it to some of my friends.

I have sold several of the Timberline Worden's and have had no complaints so far. I have been carrying one this week and am satisfied with it. I believe both the Timberline and the Columbia River KFF offer a lot of bang for the buck. The Timberline feels better to me and has a better steel. I didn't spine whack any of the ones I have had go through my hands except for the one I carry and it passes with flying colors.

With both knives you get a serviceable folder for a good price. They aren't Sebenza's but then again they aren't supposed to be. They are geared towards an entirely different target market.

Thanks, 45Shooter. That's all I needed to know.

Ah.... one spine wack test does not speak for them all. As Dennis said, the one he has passed with flying colors.

I just received my Crawford Wortac today. Very impressive. So much so that I laid MADD MAXX down to rest for a little bit! Not for long mind you!

The action on Pats is smooth as butter with excellent lockup and an A+ on the spine whacking. Handle feels GREAT. Really love that swelled end. I just ordered the Timberline version from Dennis this evening. I am looking forward to comparing them side by side.

BTW Dennis has a great price and is a SUPER fellow to boot!

Just a little update on the spine whacking problem I had on both these knives - as well as several others. I took both knives apart completely and lightly sanded the lockup surfaces with 100 grit paper - just enough to rough things up. Afterwards, both took spine whacks as hard as I could give them without any problem. It worked so well that I tested all my linerlocks and did the same to all that failed which included a Benchmade mini-AFCK and an old Kodiak. All knives now pass without fail. Incidentally, I fully agree that both these knives are great values for the money.

Thanks for the advice. I may need to dig out some of my folders and give them the treatment you describe.

Did you have any trouble getting them back together?

No trouble at all shootist, as long as you don't drop any of those damn screws in the shag carpet.

I just received the smaller of the two versions of the Timberline Worden Tactical.

Came with a very well done keen edge as well as excellent overall fit and finish.

Passes the spine whack test without any trouble. Lock engages fully and securely on the left side of the tang.

Looking forward to testing out the large version.

At the price point, I fail to see how this knife can be anything but a winner.
