Timberline Zambezi Backup
Designed by Greg Lightfoot
Did you ever order a knife and not really expect much? When I saw these Timberline Zambezi Backup knives for $14.99 from a popular online vendor, I couldn't resist. A week later when it arrived, I was amazed at the quality (so much so that I ordered two more).
The liner and locking surface is thicker than most of the liner locking knives I own and is very secure.
The pivot was a little tight so I made a slight adjustment, its now very smooth. The thumb studs have a little bead of grippy material to prevent your thumb from slipping off, its actually a nice touch.
The ergos are great for most gripping styles, but the finger cutout near the lock area make it a little difficult to unlock. This could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. You wont accidentally close the knife, but it does feel unnatural when you try to unlock it.
Like most Zytel scales, theyre not as grippy as G10. But a molded pattern adds a little grip and at the same time makes the scales look a little more expensive than they are.
I will add that this knife is not a lightweight, I havent had a chance to weigh it, but it is a bit on the heavy side. Also the manufacturer lists the blade length as 3.20, but I measured closer to 3.40.
Ive only had the knife for a day, so I cant comment on long term use or edge retention, but I have every reason to believe it would perform fine.
I would have been just as happy if I had purchased this knife for twice the price but at $14.99 its a real bargain. I also bought the Worden folder for $13.88, but I barely looked at it so maybe Ill write something about it in the future but I can say its worth 14 bucks.
