I've been very disappointed with multi-tool offerings over the last fifteen years, and while I'm not a rich man by any stretch, I've owned a bunch of multi-tools in the quest for the perfect one, ranging from Leatherman products to SOG to Swiss Army to Gerber. It's as if the industry simply will not make one as nice as our higher-end production knives. Or perhaps these tools are ultimately viewed as disposable, which seems very wasteful to me. And I've not heard of a custom version...
I want premium steel, titanium for weight reduction (aluminum is the second worst material used in the cutlery industry in my opinion--a bold statement, but heart-felt), adequate locking devices (not the rinky-dink liner locks on some currently), a pocket clip that isn't an afterthought, the ability to completely disassemble and clean/replace tools, and above all, compactness relative to a small Sebenza (keeping tools to the bare necessities, perhaps a main blade, a Phillips, a regular with bottle/can opener, etc.). One-hand operation on the main blade would be nice, but not a necessity.
There's no way I'm alone in this thinking, and I know it's not going to be cheap. And while I've not seen or heard of anyone custom-making anything like this, I'm sure CRK could problaby do it!
Heck, I'd be happy with a Swiss Army Soldier model with a frame-locking main blade that used titanium handle slabs and stainless spacers with the ability to be disassembled to removed sweat-born oxidation and pocket cheese for that matter. And a nice pocket clip. Mmmm.
Am I dreaming? CRK, I promise to buy at least two if you'll make them!
Rant mode off.
