Time for a minigrip?

So, I own a Benchmade 5500BK Mini Presidio Small auto and ordered a 7505-132 for when they are released. That is the extent of my experience with Benchmade.

I have heard good things about the mini grip and have been thinking about them for awhile now. Last night I noticed that you can custom order one directly from BM made to your specs. I have a weakness for black blades and definitely want the S30V steel, but aside from that are there any thoughts folks might have? Anything that I should definitely do or definitely not do?

TIA!

If it's your first, I'd go with the standard 154cm. It's pretty decent stuff that's worth giving a shot for your first mini grip. Just because it's standard doesn't mean it isn't a great all around steel. You should be able to easily find one from some of the large dealers for less than half of what you'd pay for the custom s30v version directly from Benchmade. Just be sure to use the discount codes the dealers are required to use to price below msrp. Then if you do really like the mini grip but the s30v is still calling your name, you could always throw it up on the exchange and shouldn't have any problems moving it.

If you have your heart set on a black blade with S30V I would recommend a Mini Ritter in that conjuration. Or, you could go with a Mini Ritter in M4 with gray cerakote blade. That is my favorite Mini Grip at the moment. I think the M4 has better edge retention than the S30V and is not as prone to chipping.

The Ritter blade is taller than the standard mini blade, but they both cut extremely well.

The mini is an excellent knife so you can't go wrong with any configuration.

Nah, not a n00b to knives. I have a decent little collection, just not much from BM. I am familiar with the characteristics of knife steel and have several knives with the S30V, and a few with the 154CM. I agree that the 154Cm is a good steel, but my preference runs to S30V. Thanks, though, for the suggestion. :)

But I don't understand the part in bold above. Could you elaborate a bit more?

^^^I believe he is referring to a policy that Benchmade has that its venders cannot directly advertise its knives below a certain percentage of a knife’s MSRP.

Retailers get around this by having you type in a promo code at checkout, login as a member to their site, or simply supply your email address to receive an instant quote from their site.

Silly if you ask me, but the knives are certainly worth the hassle.

You should also check out the 940 Osborne. It comes standard in s30v and packs an awesome blade in such a nice-sleek package. I picked up one yesterday and am very impressed.

Griptilians and Mini Grips are popular but a lot of people don't like them either. I didn't mean to suggest you were a noob, just suggesting that there is a significantly less expensive way to try out the knife you asked about, if that matters. And like someone else said above, if you're set on s30v, I'd go with the Ritter Mini Grip.

As for the discount, the dealers I buy from usually show a coupon or discount code on the page with the knife and you just have to enter it before you check out. It can get you up to 25% off the advertised price.

I love my mini grip. It is my only Benchmade. i wanted something small and descent quality, got the mini black on black tanto 154 cm. Happy with it so far.
The reason i bought it was that most my knives are on the larger side, and when just going out to dinner or a meeting, it is not needed to carry a emerson roadhouse or strider, the mini fit the bill perfect. Good little knife out of the box, sharp, nice action and the plastic { what ever it is } has grown on me. the handle material is tuff, does not show marks, and is comfortable in the hand.
For the money Benchmade wants for the custom build on there site, i would save some bucks and just buy one off the shelf in the black on black with 154cm, and then you have extra cash for cocktails after work, win win.
Anyway, it is a great little package either way in my book. Good luck

I was tempted also to order a custom off their website. But After I realized that I would be paying almost double for it and it would take three weeks to get to me I just went with a plain Jane 556 and couldn't be happier.

Love the grips. Especially the minis. How bout a little grip pron :D

Very nice! Especially the one on the left with the sand coyote (?) scales and black blade. What a little beauty!

I just bought one of those in that exact blade/color combo. The sand colored handles have a slight swirl that is much more noticeable in the sunlight. Also I highly recommend the sheepsfoot/spydie-hole blade. Works well with the middle finger flick!

Actually, I liked that pic so much that I just placed an order for one myself! That is really a great looking knife.

Still want to get one with the S30V blade, and a little more personalized, but this will get me started with my first mini-grip. Thanks!.
