Time for an introduction

Since a Becker brung me to this party, I thought I'd post my introduction here with the Beckerheads.

It's amazing how quickly your post count creeps up. I didn't anticipate spending as much time here as I have, but I've learned a lot. Now on the occasion of my 100th post, I thought I'd post the introduction I have yet to post.

I am not a huge knife guy. Not really into safe queens, although I do have a Lloyd Hale knife that was a gift. (Long story for another time perhaps). Gil Hibben lives close to us. We met when he'd come eat at our barbeque restaurant. I guess it was fate that I'd end up here eventually.

My knives have been purchased to use. I recently upgraded my goto large fixed blade with a BK7/13 combo. That led me to the Beckerheads here. I immediately became a fan of Mr. Becker and his interaction with the owners of his creations. My hat's off to you Sir.

Soon I found myself bartering with another member here for a big brother to the 7/13 combo. I am now very happy to have a bk4 as well. It has been a pleasure to use it around our property. Everything its fans say it is and more. Thanks Mr. Becker for a great tool. In the spirit of being prepared for anything, I might have it buried with me whenever that time comes. You know, just in case. lol.

Mr. Becker, if you are reading this, I have a question I don't think I've seen you address. Leaving the 9 out of this discussion, if you could only take either a BK4+BK13 OR a BK7+BK13 into the woods with you, which would it be and why? By "into the woods", I mean considering all the tasks you will need from a knife from food prep to shelter to protection.

Is 100 posts before an official introduction any kind of record? :D

Welcome to the sickness! You'll have them all eventually... Don't fight it... Just let it happen. ;)

Better get down with it, whether you keep 'em or not you'll probably own more than a few before you're done.

I'd personally vote for the 4+13 combo *unless* you're really into batoning. the BK4 isn't as good as the BK7 for straight-up batoning (it can, just not as well) but just about everything else the 4 does better. It's usually compared to the 9 for chopping ability, and the edge near the handle is perfect for small tasks.

Welcome!

What he said!

If it were me.... hmmm... since you mentioned protection and food prep, that probably tips it toward the 7/13 over the 4/13 for me. Of course, me personal choice would be 9/16.

bootzon, My phone died and I lost your number. Can you email it to me again? I have to show you what i caught this weekend with my end of our barter.

Hey Bootzon.....

Welcome and many thanks for the kind words and I do appreciate your business.....

I would definitely do a BK 13 or preferably a BK11 paired with the BK4...... I regularly wear an 11 with a Macintyre rig 24 hours a day when in the woods...the Four does everything for me from chopping, to drawknife work, to batonning as well as most "little work"...... These days my "usual" knife load out is; a Victorinox Rucksack folder, a BK11 with a MacIntyre rig, a Sixteen and A Nine or, soon to come, a BK20 for the larger tasks...... The "Ruck" has a decent wood saw, tweezers, and the world's best unpowered can opener......

BTW..... Thank you for telling us about yourself....... Too many never get around to doing the introductory post.....

All best.....

Ethan

I have to give at least token resistance if I want to celebrate our 35 year anniversary and beyond. I'm married to a saint, by the way.

Thanks for the response Ethan...and lighting the fuse on the BK20 introduction on my intro thread. Not everybody gets such a hint of a new offering to come (less than 24 hours later) in their introduction. What an honor!

Incidentally. I got this love note from Ka-Bar last night...

Ethan if you don't mind after this big weekend, might you compare and contrast the 4 and 7? I have seen and heard you talk quite a bit about the machax, but not so much on the 7. Most of what I've read is other folks paraphrasing your thoughts on it's design.

Thanks to all for your thoughts on the comparison. I really appreciate it.
