My plan is to again buy a number of the lesser expensive Victorinox SAK's to give to cutlery-challenged friends, co-workers and needy folks this year. Last year I got a bunch of knives to hand out; Recruits, Tinkers, Classics and two Bantams.
During the year I would notice someone who had no knife, but needed one, and give one to them. For the most part, people were appreciative and it opened up a discussion on the NEED to carry a knife of some sort. One guy is a kayaking partner of mine. Can you believe he didn't carry a blade? Rectified. Another was a truck driver from out of state who didn't even carry a basic knife. Done. A neighbor who has helped me on occasion. New knife in his pocket. My wife now carries TWO knives, a Classic and Delica (gasp!) on a daily basis. I've even heard her extoll the virtues of a pocket knife to others.
Of course this won't make everyone run out an buy an Axis-lock, but at least another voter might not see a knife as a "weapon" instead of a tool. Especially since the attack of 9/11. Who could mistake those pretty red scales as something sinister? I would always mention the evil in a person's heart as the problem, instead of an object being evil.
Maybe this won't solve all of the problems in this world, but at least it might get some of us to talk more, instead of reacting out of emotion alone.
Here endith the lesson of the day. Dave
