I needed a new winter coat so off we went last night to see what was on sale. Found a good one along the lines of a Columbia parka for less than a 1/4 of the marked price. Went to several other major stores and found chamois and flannel shirts at about the same markdown and a coat for our ten year old that should fit him next winter if we stop feeding him four squares a day. I realize there are folks on here and it is summer in your part of the world but here winter gear is going to have to go and they are making deals...check your favorite places before you wish you had. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Yep, just picked up a fleece vest from a reputable regional chain to replace my beat old one for 40% off.
The clothing seasons are hilarious. It's the coldest weeks of winter right now and cold weather clothes are on sale.

That's when they get the desperate and grateful buyers. :D
You know they need to clear the shelves for warm weather clothes before Spring.

I was at the store today and all the cold weather gear was on sale, big time. I didn't buy anything, but I thought about it. A lot of deals to be had right now.

Need a new fleece vest.
Cabelas impulse buy $9.99 fleece vest is starting to show it's age.

Buying off season is the way to go; you save a bunch of money. Then if you're lucky you forget you bought it and it's like a surprise next year.

Sierra Trading Post is the devil.
Now is definitely the time, though, for retail stores and outlets. The prices really bottom out in the spring, but the selection isn't there by then. The biggest challenge for me is not impulse buying stuff I don't need.
No choice of color, and the only one that was left in size L, but I did good on the $200 down jacket I use around camp. Came from a 70% off rack:)

I bought an ice fishing tent for almost a hundred bucks off the regular seasonal price. Then I see it marked down another twenty a few weeks later. I go in with the receipt and they credted my account for that extra twenty.

Except for footwear, I try to buy military surplus, Canadian or U.S., because it's often cheaper, has been tested and used a lot, so reviews are easy to find. But the reviews are important to understand the gear's limitations. I've just purchased from the Sportsman Guide, (I expect the products this week). I wish I had come across them sooner, they seem to have good prices and selection. One thing that I have noticed with several supplier is to be careful when any product is advertised as Military Style. There are big price differences and I assume that this correlates to quality in comparison to the real deal.

Yes I go surplus more often than not. As long as it meets my needs I could care less if I look like a rat azz. I could model for the L.L. Bean fart catalogue. :D
