Time for some gloating

This is about carving tools but they are really specialized knives so I think this gloat is appropriate here.

I went to the Woodcraft Store last weekend to pick up some carving tools. Mostly I carve with knives, i.e. whittle, but I needed some tools to do hair on my woodspirits so I went down to see what they had. They had a clearance table and on it I found a couple of store-brand 5/32" U-veiners that had a little bit of rust on the shafts. They were marked down to $3 apiece. I also found a Flexcut 1/4" rounded gouge marked down to $9. I took a 5/32" V-parting tool off the rack and the owner said he'd let me have it for $10. So I got around $65 worth of tools for $25. The best part is I had just received 4 $25 AmEx "Gift Cheques" at work in recognition for acting as an unofficial advisor to some folks working on a project, so I just whipped one of them out, signed it, and went in my pocket for only the $1.25 tax! I brought the tools home and buffed out the rust spots and they are good as new. What a bargain!

Woodcraft rules. I can spend hours in that place. I have seen some good "Damaged Goods" for sale in the local one too.

I DID spend hours in there although I only purchased a few items. One of my new acquaintances at work does wood turning - pens, bowls, etc. - so I was checking out that stuff. They have an amazing selection of exotic woods for pen turning. I'm even thinking about buying a mini lathe and trying my hand at it. If nothing else, I may finally gain some skill in wood finishing.

Very cool. Can't beat free knives and a hobby that requires them. Have you tried your hand at making wood scales for steel-handled knives? I'd like to try that sometime.
