Time to buy a new knife and would like advice

Hello guys,

I've been carrying a SOG Flash II since they first came out years ago. It's been a decent everyday knife, but it's been through some wear and tear and I think it's time for retirement. My only complaint about the knife is that it doesn't seem to hold an edge for a lengthy amount of time. I believe the blade steel is AUS 8.

I've been looking around for a new knife lately and I've narrowed it down to the Spyderco Endura in VG-10 or the Benchmade Griptilian in 154CM. Having no experience with either of these knives or their manufacturers, I'd like some feedback or suggestions. Specifically, which of these would you choose, and why?

I'm sure that some of you may have alternatives to suggest, and I'm open to those too. I'm looking for something $80 or under.

Thanks!

Moved to General since neither the Endura or Griptilian are considered traditional knives.

Either would make a great choice though so I think it would boil down to visual appeal and ergonomics.

Welcome to BFC. I hope you enjoy it here.

Welcome

No offense intended, but I think you should rather post this in the General forum, instead of the traditional forum.

But maybe you want to consider a traditional knife as well.

Now that was fast Gus

Sorry to tell you but this is the wrong sub-forum for that type of question. A better place would be the General Knife Discussion. I would get a Victorinox though.

Out of the 2 you chose, I would get the Endura.

Welcome to BF!!! I hope you enjoy your time here.

I have both and use both. Overall, though, I gravitate toward Spyderco products for day-to-day users. They're like .25 Bic pens... they work... first time, every time. They're usually as sharp as any prod knife O-O-B and they're easy for me to resharpen. Their locks are strong and dependable and their materials are well suited to the purpose of the knife model. VG10 is my second fav blade steel for a 3" EDC folder. The Endura will be a little flatter in your pocket than the Grip, if that matters.

The Grips and mini-Grips are also great knives. I have a collection of them in different blade steels that gets carried and used fairly regularly. The AXIS lock on the Benchmades is very smooth and is a very strong and dependable lockup. I've found that the BMs I've bought don't come quite as sharp as the Spydercos based on a few simple, non-scientific cutting trials with new blades, but they sharpen up easily using a Sharpmaker and the 154CM Grips that I have are among the sharpest blades I've got. The Grip may have a little better feel in your hand if you like thicker handles.

Both knives are ambidextrous for opening/closing. The Endura will give you a four position clip choice (L or R, TU or TD), the Grip will be 2 position (L or R, TU only).

My two most frequent EDC work knives are a Spyderco Caly 3 in VG10 and a BM mini-RSK in S30V. I don't think you'll have a problem with either one. Both are capable of lasting for many years with proper care, even if you use them hard. Like Gus said... it's more a matter of personal taste and fit between the Endura and the Grip.

Both are excellent knives. If this is a knife that you intend to carry in your pocket all day, every day, I would go with the Endura as it is noticeably flatter and would be more comfortable to carry (for me). It is also less blade-heavy.

I have had both and prefer the Grips. The primary grind is higher on the BM and it cuts better for me. I like the thickness of the Spyderco as well as the steel, but the Griptilian wins overall in my book. The tip on the Grip is more acute than that of the Endura. Also, the Endura feels like a much larger knife and just a little too big for my taste. Either are great knives though, it is a personal chioce.

I would go with the minigrip. Mainly because i think thumbstuds look better and i also love the axis lock. Both knives are amazing and you will be happy with either one.
