A friend told me it's basically impossible to get Strider to make a custom knife, although he has one, an SMF XL tanto nightmare grind, with the blade signed/engraved by Strider. Cool knife.

So, if Strider customs are that rare, I wonder how many bladeforumers have them. Have you seen one? What's it like? Any of those flaws we hear so much about? Also, pics please!

I have seen plenty of Strider customs at various knife shows. They are great knives but a bit pricey for me. I own a Strider SnG and a PT but not any Strider customs. Mostly the flaws that people talk about are in the production Striders and I can attest to them.

They are scarce, but I would not say rare. You can buy customs on many of the Strider dealer sites. Even ebay has 3 right now, more if you include the Starlingear or special run ones.

getting strider to make you a custom knife and getting a custom strider are two different things.

i have never heard of anyone special ordering a custom from their shop.

but there are plenty of customs out there and available.

these abbreviations designate whether it is custom:
msc=mick strider custom
ddc=duane dwyer custom

Aha, so that's the key. Getting them to make you one to your specs is the problem.

So, a question might be whether their "custom" knives are truly custom, or perhaps personally made by them, as opposed to being made production style. Would that be a fair characterization of the issue?

Not a lot of "custom" knives are in fact custom, quite the opposite most are not.

Strider pumps out a fair bit of hand ground knives in pre-existing patterns. A lot of makers do that, hand ground knives that aren't custom.

A custom knife would be you designing a knife with a maker than contracting him to make it for you, quite uncommon but that is a true custom.

Having just gone through that process with a knife maker, it's definitely different than simply buying a knife that a maker produced one at a time. Thanks.

it depends on your definition of custom.

they are not custom in the sense that they are made specifically for one person. the company considers the hand ground blades as customs, and sells them as such. there may be other "personal" touches to the blades and scales to set them apart from the standard versions.

Well can we see his?

apparently not, but you can see mine.

No doubt.
They refused to even make a thicker locking side at my expense when I requested.
Good knives (well, the folders at least), but they do it their way, and are not open to suggestion at all.
They weren't all that polite regarding my request either. Not really rude, but not polite either.

they seem to take customers for granted

And, in fact, they are. Strider can pretty much do whatever the hell they want, and there will still be a long line of people wanting to buy their knives... at really high prices. History shows this to be a very dependable statement.

I guess they were in a good mood that day. Apparently, Strider being rude to customers is designed to train future "high speed operators" and prepare them for I dunno what.
Customer complaints as usual are considered "sniveling", since the real men don't complain when their prepaid orders are delayed for months...

Maybe I was "hard-core" enough, seeing as I wanted a THICKER lock-bar cut-out with thicker slab as well.:D
Still wasn't going to happen though, and they tried BSing me with how much extra work it would be.
I replied that it's a matter of changing the depth of cut, which takes about 5 seconds tops (I used to work with CNC machines:)).

If you Google it, you'll find lots of online knife shops that sell Strider/Dwyer customs.
