Time to put an old friend down

'Ol Mission Dawg is 16 now and she's been a good friend for every one of those years. Her hips are starting to go, and her hind legs droop when she walks. She doesn't run any more and she has trouble getting up. The big problem is that she is loosing control of her bowel and she craps in her crate...and gets crap all over her...and she stinks so bad I have to give her a bath, which has to be done outside. When the weather gets cold this is gonna be hard for her to bear; I fear it will be cruel and a cold bath in the freezing weather may kill her. So I think it's time to put her down. :( The vet wants $375.00 including cremation but if I do it myself I can take her to the pound who will cremate her for $25.00. I can't shoot her in the head...I live in suburbia...and besides...what if I didn't kill her with the first shot? That would be horrible. I was thinking of putting her to sleep with car exhaust. I'm just thinking this through now 'cause I'm gonna have to deal with it soon, one way or the other.

What do you guys think?

I say its worth the $375 to do it humanely. I could never think about putting one of my own dogs down.
Call me a pansy. But to me they are family.

use the Vet. have them come to YOUR house (a lot of them will do this) so your dog is in comfortable and familiar surroundings. Its the best way.

having said that i had to put down my buddies dog while we hunting (dog fell off a bankment and hit a sharp stick). My friend couldn't do it and at the last second missed his shot (and hit the dog elsewhere) . I had to grab his rifle and put his dog down. That kind of thing stays with you and is NOT a good memory. Do it right with the vet drugs, its a painless sleep.

sorry to hear about this, these critters really do become family.

god bless.

edit: if its a money issue a lot of vets will take payment plans. Just ask.

Dude, no. Talk to your vet about having them do the injection and take your dog to the pound, or go to a different vet.

It's to hard to betray trust like that yourself, you'd feel guilty even if you did it right.

Gotta be the vet buddy...you'd never forgive yourself if you do it !!!

Can the vet not do it but you take her body away rather than it be cremated...would that be cheaper ?

Another vote for the vet. Just shell out the cash. May not be that cheap, but it is the right way to go and really on the only way. Do it any other way and you'll be thinking of how you did in the dog instead of the happiness you had with the dog.

Vet man. 16 years of loyalty. I'd sell something to do it that way if I had to. Talk to the vet and see if he/she can come down on the $ or do a payment plan. Also, if you have a university with a vet program close, check with them. I know we have one close that assists in these matters and is much cheaper. It is an ag college and those kids have a heart, so I'd feel comfortable going there with my pal. I feel for you; I know that's tough. That picture you posted makes me want to cry.

Be a good friend to her and have the vet put her down. It's the final kindness you can give her. Hold her, pet her and talk to her as she takes her final breath.

It's heartbreaking to lose a good friend like that. Do both of you a kindness, and let the vet do the job.

Same here, use the vet 16 years of loyalty is well worth the $375, They will actually put her to sleep before they do anything and she wont feel a thing. It will still be hard on you but you will have the peace of mind knowing that she didn't suffer

For both of your sake, go with the vet, like others said, there has to be a more affordable way.

Great looking dog. I'm sorry to hear it's time to part company, but glad you are able to be there to help. Like the other guys have said, I'd get a vet to assist with this final act of compassion.

Have the vet do it. You could never forgive yourself if you did it. Sorry for the loss :(

That sucks. Call around, $375 sounds kinda high.

I've used vets and I've put dogs down myself. Niether way is easy.

SDS

I'll second what SDS is saying, I know it's a real pain to put a friend down.

Watching a vet pull out the syringes is just as bad as pulling a trigger, at least for me it was.

I won't offer any advice, as I think that others have already expressed my opinion.

But I do want to offer my condolences, CitizenQ. This sort of thing is always difficult. I hope that it gets resolved with a minimum of pain - for you and your dog. Hold on to those good memories.

All the best,

- Mike

I've thought about this for a couple hours now and I still don't know what to tell you. It's going to be tough no matter what you do. I have an almost 11 yr. old dog myself that I've had since he was a puppy. He's still in good health but I know the day will come for me and him to go through what you are going through.
