Time to up grade sharpening tools?

Hi all, I've benn sharpening knives and broadheads for quite a while now. My grandfather taught me a bit back around 11, and then a nice retired butcher taught me some more around 15.
By 18 I had all my knives shaving, but not always hair popping sharp. I used Arkansas stones, later moving to an Edge Crafter diamond sharpener/file, with magnets to hold the plates. I'm now 46 an found this forum, and also found I'm behind the times or have been to cheap to get a good large extra fine diamond stone. I have a cheap belt sander that I've used a bit, mostly broadheads.

Now my question is, should I skip getting better stones and just get a paper wheel system?

Thanks,
JD

I'd say that iv never heard a single bad thing about the paper wheel, and I'd go for one!

Also some other things to consider are sharpenig systems by edg pro and wicked edge..

Oh and welcome to blade forums!

Hey vajd, welcome to the forum! The paper wheel system is a great system, that can be learned fairly quickly. You are ahead of the game with your prior knowledge of edge angles and the effect of working with an abrasive system on your knives. I have a set of paper wheels and love the results I get with them. I bought a Harbour Freight 6 inch buffer and the paper wheels, and only have about $90 invested in the whole system. I bought about a dozen old kitchen knives from local thrift shops for $1 each and learned how to use the wheels with them before turning to my folders. I have mostly small pocket slippies and have sharpened friends knives of all sizes. I sharpened a cheap machete to hair shaving sharp on them also. It takes me about 4 - 5 minutes per blade to hair popping sharp, only because I am slow and deliberate. :) You won't be sorry with the wheels.

Blessings,

Omar

Thanks, I'm going paper wheel! has anyone sharpened traditional two bladed broadheads on paper wheels?
the point being double sided could catch, getting excited about the speed I'll be able to do a quiver full.

Check with forum member Richard J, as he is the local paper wheel Guru. I think I remember reading something he posted about sharpening Broadheads. If I can find a link I will post it for you. Ahaa! search is your friend. Here he talks about sharpening broadheads himself. Contact him and he will be more than happy to guide you.

What kind of belt sander is it that you have? I personally would rather have one versus a paper wheel system due to cost and versatility. Meaning you can use it for so many other things like making knives, so many different belts, and you can create a convex or v edge.

It's a cheap delta 1" wide belt and a disk on the right side.
Sunday I used a worn belt to remove the mini-serations on a yard sale J.A. Henckels Eversharp, I like the knife way better now.
I just thought my belt sander wasn't a good enough for nice knives to much wobble and vibration. But I never considered other types of belts. may need to get the paper wheel set up then, work on up grading to a real belt sander.
