As some may have noticed, when it comes to food, one meal stands out for me, and that meal is breakfast. We've had showdowns and as a result some amazing dishes have happened thanks to breakfast. Today, I throw down the gauntlet.

Make your best breakfast.

Now, unlike a goodly number of people on this planet, I do not suffer from the affliction that is having to have breakfast items for breakfast. I believe in eating whatever the heck you want for your first meal of the day, be that lasagna, or cake, or tacos. So regardless of what you want to eat, the important bit is making it for breakfast. So let's see what you got. Winners will be decided by myself, and possibly a panel of judges. Skill counts, presentation counts, and something I can reproduce and sample first hand definitely counts. Location of where said breakfast was made will play a major role as well, so if you feel the need to hit the great outdoors that would do nothing but help your cause.

Rules

1. You MUST use a Becker knife whilst making your breakfast. Either to cut up the ingredients, the end result, or anyone who gets too near your food. Something, anything, whatever, knife has to be in the mix somewhere.

2. This MUST be eaten for breakfast. If you have leftovers and eat them for lunch then awesome, but the meal you are making needs to be eaten for breakfast.

3. You MUST submit pics. You can tell me what you had, and it might sound amazing, but without pics, it didn't happen. And those pics need to show the knife.

4. These MUST be new pics, not reused old stock.

As per usual, neither Ka-Bar, Ethan Becker, Bladeforums, or anyone else is responsible for your actions during this contest. Should you hurt yourself, we are not to be held liable and by entering you agree that no other parties will be held responsible for any of your actions. No one except me is even associated with this, and there is absolutely nothing compelling anyone to enter or participate. Use your head, don't cut anything important off, and be safe.

To participate you must either be a Beckerhead in good standing, or a member of the Becker Knife and Tool subforum that has been a regular part of our community. No showing up just because it says contest and hoping to win free stuff. I know who the regulars are and you will just be wasting your time. Moderators of the Becker Knife and Tool subforum are ineligible for this contest (but don't worry, I haven't forgotten you, you guys will be getting something without having to jump through hoops, PM me for more details).

To enter you must be over 18.

One post per entrant, you may have as many pics as you would like of your entry but they must all fit into a single post. Only entries in this thread. NO CHATTING!!! If you are chatting you will be disqualified. Chatting means asking questions or chit chat back and forth or anything that isn't you describing your entry and pics of it. There is a discussion thread for this located here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...est-Discussion-Thread?p=12728319#post12728319

Contest will run until November 1. Then the winners will be chosen.

PRIZES

There will be two winners. The prizes will be custom Kydex sheaths made by myself and ThePointyEnd for any regular tweener, or for the saber ground BK16. These can be a regular kydex sheath (i.e. no open sides or anything weird) or the style we are making with the open "air welt" design. I do not currently have a BK17, but they fit perfectly in sheaths made to fit the saber ground BK16 (they are exactly the same profile for most of the blade just with a clip point ground in on the 17) or if that doesn't work we might need you to send us one to use while we make the sheath (we will get it back quickly if it comes to that). If you want one for a full flat BK16 we can do that as well, and I will give you the option of having me do it using the saber BK16 or the full flat version. The prizes will be the sheath itself, and maybe some sort of belt strap or other attachment method depending on how it all goes. Might even toss in firesteel loops or something, who knows. We can size these to fit a knife with liners but we will need to know the width of the liners you are using. If you have third party grips we may need to get your knife from you to ensure proper fitment, but we will try everything we can to make them fit properly without it.

We *should* have color options other than black at the point this contest ends, specifically coyote and olive drab. And of course black will definitely be an option. We are also going to be trying some different shapes for our sheaths aside from just the plain rectangular "brick" that we have made so far. More pics of those as we make them.

Here are some pics of some of the sheaths we have done thus far:

I sincerely doubt this is the best I can do - there's no egg volcano involved - but it's what I made this morning.
starting with a pumpkin cream cake SWMBO bought and is now tired of eating.
"murrikan toast"

10 slices of cake
5 cackleberries
a splash of milk
a splash of mexican vanilla
add to cast iron and heat
attachment.php

top with peanut butter and Canadian maple Syrup (thanks again, Gus!)

After processing some steak last night (for tonight's dinner), I had some leftover bits. I used the BK5 and 15 to trim the meat and even reduce one of the steaks to two with half the thickness.
KP2S6eJ.jpg

I also cut up pepperoni to go along with the meal.

We all love to snack on cooked pepperoni. It's a family tradition that goes back at least five generations, though usually it's baked in the oven.
fNOpJNO.jpg

A little onion...
rSeIpDp.jpg

Salt and pepper the steak bits
VN1EDE6.jpg

Ready to go
0dNbHAH.jpg

I'm cooking outside, because the fumes from the pepperoni are pretty harsh.
axcOFDi.jpg

I start with the steak, as that pan gets hot fast.
KVZ0pCw.jpg

Here's the pepperoni.
Ogf0Vo3.jpg

I find a grill pan works really well. It keeps the pepperoni out of its own grease, and it's easier to check for doneness. Notice the smoke. It'll make you cough right quick if you don't have good ventilation.
xGzZtTT.jpg

Steak is resting, now for some onion.
Y15yacH.jpg

The pepperoni is done, and cooling.
G8XLt6B.jpg

Eggs go in last. I salt and pepper the pan first, then toss in the eggs, finally sprinkle salt, pepper, and cayenne.
F9RwhgA.jpg

A quick flip of the eggs, and I pull them off after a few seconds. I like the yolks runny.
j2aqZGE.jpg

Here's everything on a plate. The steak was medium-rare, the eggs perfect, the onion was sweet, and the pepperoni was crispy on the outside and chewy inside. I used my favorite steak knife, the BK15, to eat it.

Today I made my own "Birthday Breakfast". Potatoes, sausage and eggs and used a BK 14 to peel potatoes and the awesome BK-5 to slice and chop stuff. The knives met all challenges!!!

It was awesome - Happy Birthday to me!! :D

Start by sauteeing bacon, sausage, and onion in a pan

Then add potatoes to a baking pan
IMG_00000136-1.jpg

Top them with the bacon/sausage/onion mixture
IMG_00000137.jpg

Mix in cheese (cheddar and cottage), eggs, and milk
IMG_00000138.jpg

Top with more cheese then bake
IMG_00000140.jpg

Bake covered for 45 minutes uncovered for 15
IMG_00000141.jpg

cut it open and om nom nom nom!

Smoked sausage, eggs over easy, and toast.
BK5 on kitchen duty.
Served on fine china.

So, breakfast at La Casa de Ironborn usually involves some kind of leftovers, and generally trying to fry said leftovers with eggs. This gave rise to the verb "frashing", as in to "frash", when one morning we tried to make hashbrowns out of leftover French fries.... Then came the day when we had day old pizza in the fridge and asked "can we frash it?"
YES BY GOD!
Now, if you want to frash along with me and gift yourself with a beatific mouthgasm, you'll need:

Cold pizza (I'd recommend 2 small or 1 large slice for every 4 eggs. Also, supreme style pizza seems to work best...)
Eggs
Butter
Becker knife (BK15 in this case)

Dice pizza:

Scramble eggs:

Melt butter in pan, add eggs:

When eggs are HALF cooked, toss in the pizza (make sure to vigorously mix the pizza into the eggs so that the crust absorbs the uncooked egg, much like savory French toast bits):

Cook another 5 min until the eggs are done and the cheese is all melty! Garnish with hot sauce, beer, and a robot:

Congratulations! Pizza Eggs! Share it with your friends and loved ones--they'll be dubious at first, but once they taste it you are fully entitled to say, "You're effing welcome!"

I finally had a chance to make my breakfast yesterday morning. It was perfect timing too, I got old fashioned "lit the ____ up" saturday night and amazingly woke up Sunday morning with no hangover and a healthy appetite. Looks like great minds think alike, I basically made the same thing C-Bear made..

I started with some center cut bacon and jalapeno smoked bacon, breakfast sausage, and some left over Kiolbasa from our BBQ the night before. I used my Becker kitchen knives to prepare the meal.

2wmu.jpg

cooked up the bacon and the sausage in the leftover bacon grease.

w5ou.jpg

I like to use the southern style hash browns, they are cut in cubes instead of shredded. I used a dozen eggs. Just layer your pan with potato, meat, cheese.. repeat. I season the eggs before I add them to the stacked mixture.

This was going to be 2nd breakfast.. I also made some honey and biscuits and eggs for the wife and kid while I was making the casserole. Had to sample a honey butter biscuit too, mmm.

dmh1.jpg

Ready to go in the oven, I cooked it at 425 covered in cheese and a thin layer of tin foil..

kvvd.jpg

Time to enjoy first breakfast while 2nd is baking... couple fried eggs over a biscuit with some Sriracha on top..

u2fb.jpg

Check the oven frequently to make sure no one has stolen your wonderful creation!

e79j.jpg

After about 30 minutes, remove the foil to brown the top and firm up the insides..

owyb.jpg

You will know it is done when you start drooling uncontrollably...

c3eh.jpg

Cut out a chunk and top with your favorite.... I love some spicy ketchup!

5slk.jpg

Brought some to work with me this morning.. threw some special seasoning and a slice of jalapeno jack on it for an extra kick.. even better the 2nd day! :D

Thanks for the contest Derek! great idea.

I started out with peeling up some potatoes. All work was done with my FFG BK16 it isnt the best peeler but it worked fine and that shows its versatility.

These were put in the cast iron to cook, next was an onion and I got some biscuits started in another cast iron pan. While I dont have a cool outdoor kitchen yet I did make the spatula out of an apple branch with a BK9 and a BK11, I use it all the time.

Let that cook a while and cut up some patio steak to throw in.

Stirred in some eggs and the biscuits are done.

Final product. A steak and potato breakfast burrito topped with home made salsa from our garden and cheese. Biscuits with my own fresh harvested honey. A nice cup of coffee to top it off. Seasoning was basic salt and black pepper with some red peppers as well.

Derek's Breakfast Challenge,

Off The Grid Breakfast,

Or

Just because you live like a Savage, doesn't mean you have to eat like one.

This is a highly technical meal with very precise measurements and careful timing. It should only be attempted by trained professionals!!

Up comes the Sun,

Maybe it will help with this,

First, BK-4 some wood into fire size pieces,

Something like this, with some Birch Bark for ignition,

Get a fire going,

Add some wood and while your fire is getting bigger, grind up some fresh Coffee,

And get this going,

The Raw Materials, (sounds like a cool name for a band, doesn't it?)
Mostly just a bunch of leftover crap from Corned Beef dinner on Sunday night.

Chop up an onion, Did you know if you chop off a little bit of the bottom, it will sit flat and not slide all over when you are trying to cut it up?

Melt about 2 tablespoons of butter in your hash pan,

Add Onions,

Chop up the left over potatoes, and a little red pepper,

When the onion gets translucent, add the peppers,

Let that cook for a bit, then add the potatoes, salt and pepper to taste,

Chop up the left over Corned Beef,

When it looks about like this,

Add the Corned Beef, and another tablespoon of butter,

Stir it up and let it cook, at this point it was up to 17 degrees so I covered it for a bit.

Now comes the highly technical part,

Dice up a clove of garlic real small,

When the hash is done to your liking, add the garlic, and stir it in,

Slice up the Wife's homade left over bread,

Warm up the egg pan, and add a little butter,

Add the eggs, and throw on the toast,

Slide'em to the middle and cover with your plate, to warm the plate and eliminate any runny egg white issues, and while you're at it flip the toast and butter,

And there you have it. Off the Grid Hash, Sunny Side Up Eggs, Toast, and Coffee,

Alright, I'm going to lock this up, and should be back in the next couple of days with the winners. I like the entries, most of them, so this is going to be a tough one to call.

Alright, I've eaten recently, so I can view this thread without going insane. There was not a single bad entry, and not a single dish made that I would not eat for breakfast (or any other meal for that matter) so it made this a very difficult call. Some entries were similar, but each had it's own thing going on. That being said, there must be winners, and there must be losers.

LostViking, you take first place. You made a beautiful meal, and you did it outdoors. Lots of good pics, and at the end you had a meal that would be right at home during me and Pointy's breakfast shenanigans.

LeeBower, you take second. The inclusion of your "first breakfast" while waiting for "second breakfast" to finish up was fantastic, and the food you made looked pretty darn good too. Sriracha, "Special Shit" seasoning, it looked fantastic.

Now I originally said two winners, but one entry stuck out. One entry fit the word that me and Pointy seem to unknowingly strive for when we cook, and it gets said rarely, but when it gets said, it is with good reason.

1066vik, what you made fit ever so well with that word, that epic pinnacle and utter essence of breakfast shenaniganry. Decadence. Purely and truly, cake french toast fits that description only too well. So consider yourself a third place.

Wish I could give away something to everyone, but I won't. I will say they were all amazing looking meals though. Mac, the pepperoni being cooked like that is something I went and tried immediately, and they were awesome. Ironborn, the inclusion of leftover pizza was incredible and will be duplicated the next time we have leftover pizza here. Never would have thought of that on my own.

So, that being said, first two, shoot me a holler about what you want. Size, color, style, etc... Post it up here and we will hash out the details and get it sorted. Erik, I will holler at you sometime in the next few days to see what you would like, but if I don't, you got my number, so call me if I don't call you.

Congratulations LV and LB! I must say that Dereck hit the nail on the head with his decision!

Wow, thank you very much! I need to think about it a bit and I will post back.

Very cool contest, congrats to the winners and props to all the other entries, this thread is full of epic..

Congratulations LostViking and LeeBower! Thanks to Derek for the cool contest and great prizes. Breakfast is one of my four favorite meals of the day.

Thanks Derek and thanks to everyone else too, all great stuff, and lots of fun,

I will re-read the prize section and let you know shortly. This might spur me to grab that BK-17 I have been looking at.

Because of bad weather, I had the day off. I understand if this entry is in invalid because of rule #2.
