I got one of them back yard fire pits the other day and wanted to break it in.
I thought it might be fun to time myself on how long it would take to get a fire going using only what I might have with me out hiking / camping.
I carry a few strike anywhere matches sealed in a straw with my necker. so that is what I used. It was the first match fire I have started in a very long time. I have been using a fire steel for years. I also used a bit of fat wood about the size of a golf pencil.
So with necker in hand I started timing. Walked to a brush pile in my yard grabbed a arm full went to the fire pit made some shavings from the fat wood and brush. Using a nice nest of inter bark from a cotton wood.( it was a little damp the sprinklers went off about a hour before)
When I went to strike the match on my zipper it broke( The match not the zipper) twice. Thats the way life works sometimes so I got it going on the third strike. Still only needing one match. I stopped the time when I had a fire going well enough to sit back a little and only maintain it.
Time about 11 minutes. I thought it would be much faster 3-4 minutes
Any takers? Whats your time? What did you use?
