Hey Guys,I've talked to a few knifemakers about new steels coming to the market.Timken Latrobe's 20CV came up in a conversation.I contacted them,They say they where still in the proto stage on that particular product.I know there's been alot of interest in ZDP-189,Latrobe states 20CV which is a powder steel has 20% cromium.Same as ZDP-189.Has anyone else heard when 20CV will be available? Thanks,Rick.

At the blade show it was still in the future.Hope they get it soon.I'm having my son pick up some ZDP-189 in Tokyo.Sure would be easier with Timken.

Rick,
A knifemaker I spoke with just order a piece of 20CV. Somewhere around $16.00 a pound. He was able to purchase from Timken, because a large knife company did not take the complete steel production run.

I filled out the contact form on Timken's website asking who sells their steel in Germany. As the contact form itself was in German, I wrote my question is German too.

At once I get a reply consisting of, "we need this translated into english". So I did and sent it back via email.

After a number of days then with no reply, I once again replied to old email from Timken asking if in fact anyone sold their steel products here in Germany.

Then I get a reply back. A one word reply from Timken: "yes"

More days go by and I hear nada from them. No address of this mysterious dealer. Nothing. So I emailed Timken again, saying if they do sell their steel here and are so inclined, have their rep get in touch with me. That was days agon and still nothing.

So I guess the 1000's of $ a year I spend on steel will continue going to Crucible, Böhler and the other fine steel mills who know how to sell their products.

BTW: I have a piece of ZDP-189 which is laminated ATS-34 around a monster PM steel core but I haven't made a blad of it yet.

Timken's 20CV is a direct copy of Bohler's M390 PM stainless. Timken does not make this themselves but buys it from european mills (not Bohler).

20CV arrived with a little bow in the sheet. :thumbdn: But the knifemaker who ordered the steel, took it to the bandsaw to section the sheet up and went through way too much work and bandsaw blades. Hard stuff! Next: a filet or hunting knife.
