Looking for explanation of the benefits or drawbacks of various blade coatings:

Titanium carbo-nitride, Tungsten DLC, etc.

effective corrosion protection or not? How durable are they? expensive?

Not big for corrosion protection, designed to control reflected light. Durability varies by application and material used by the manufacturer. Some coating do protect against rust, most do not (according to some manufacturers on this forum). If you do a search for DLC or blade coatings, you will find a ton of discussions, some very good on the subject.

Customers who do long term knife use look at it and determine if they like the wear it shows. You will see some scratching sometimes when you use it giving it some character. Besides that, I would suggest you look into a nice duracoat.

Cerakote is my preferred coating of choice. In the latest testing Cerakote out preformed all the others hands down.

i like DLC coatings. it is the only black coating i have used that actually stands up to use. most of the other painted coatings tend to scratch very easily.
