I was playing around in the woods the other day and decided to see how good I was at making a fire. I didn't have a problem starting one as there was plenty of deadfall and some birch trees around to provide tinder to get the fire going. But then a thought came to me - what if there weren't any birch trees around? In my part of the world the primary trees are spruce. Birch trees are scattered about, but I wouldn't count on finding one.
That being the case, what are some alternate tinders I might find? The only ones I could thing of off the top of my head were fluff on cattails (the plant, not my siamese) and old mans bears ( a type of moss). Any other suggestions? Remember, the only trees around are spruce.
