Hello all,

First post from an FNG. Does anyone here offer TiNi coating services? My Tops Wild Pig Hunter took on some rust while stored in a safe; I removed the oiginal coating from Tops. I stored it because of hot spots on the guard. (circled in red) I would like to have those areas relieved (rounded) a bit to be more comfortable and then coated. Also would like a Kydex sheath made. Will 1095 accept TiNi? Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Do you mean Titanium Nitride coating which is golden yellow color?
If you do I think this is not a good idea.

I'm looking for the black satin finish that SOG uses on many of their knives. I have several SOG knives that I use hard and that finish is very durable. I was thinking that maybe someone on this forum had the equipment and experience with the process. If not, does anyone have recomendations on other finishes that are similar in appearance and durability? Thanks

PVD (Particle Vapor Deposition) coatings are very hard and very thin. If you need a satin finish, the blade should have satin finish. TDLC (Tungsten Diamond Like Coatings) are WC (Tungsten Carbide) at about 72 HRC (Hardness Rockwell C Scale). They are Jet black and can be glossy if applied over a glossy surface. TiAlN (Tungsten Aluminum Nitride) coatings at about 92 HRC are charcoal colored and tend to look less glossy. TiN (Titanium Nitride) coatings at about 82HRC are Gold colored.
Blades are processed in batches on racks in a vacuum chamber, so the cost treating a single blade tends to be expensive a lot like heat treating.

As I understand it, the material to be vaporized is draped over electrodes which turn said material into a vapor state. These electrodes cannot transfer a lot of heat to the blades because of the vacuum. In fact, the electrodes do not have to be in close proximity to said blades.
