TiNi coating on Titanium???

Can any of the Titanium Nitride Coatings be applied to Titanium.

Specifically I was thinking about Titanium Carbon Nitride on 6AL4V.

The reason I ask is the coatings have very high RCs (around 90) and I thought it might be interesting to do something like BucCoat on a Titanium Blade

Clever idea. The problem is that when you need to resharpen the blade, and you will eventually, you will uncover the base titanium and the knife egde will stop functioning well. Might as well use aluminum.

Sure made me think though.

SDouglas,
Yes Titanium will take any of the various Titanium Nitride coatings, but remember the coating is VERY thin. The coating will have a hard time increasing the performance of Titanium as a blade material, because the coating will not be 'supported' very well by the softer Titanium blade. It should help some, but after you sharpen the blade 1 time, all advantages will be gone.

Larry Harley would be a great source of info on this subject. Where is he when you need him........

I make components at my full time job out of 6AL4V and 6AL6V Ti. Many of these parts are TiN coated to reduce friction in certain applications. As Will mentioned above the soft Ti. does not support the thin .0001-.0005" layer of the TiN coating. It's easy to dent the Ti. right through the coating. Thicker coatings are very expensive and are prone to chipping and delamination.

I can see the problem of Titanium not supporting the Coating.

I don't think sharpening would be as much of an issue because if you follow the BucCoat model you use a chisel edge and only sharpen the uncoated side.

This will not challenge a good steel blade but it might help squeeze a little extra performance out of the Titanium Knives already being made.
