Tinkering with Becker sheaths

So for those of us that like the factory sheaths that come with Becker knives, what's the best way to loosen up to retaining strap? Without any modification to the handle the strap is fine, but if you wrap the handle in paracord or add a ranger band suddenly that strap gets a lot tighter and a lot harder to use.
