Ran across this in a flea market. Price was more than I would be willing to pay, but I may go haggle with the guys if there's something interesting behind the size or pattern. I'd love to get a little thing like this and re-hang it for my son to take into the woods.

Pics aren't working

Yeah, the poll on this thing is pretty darn beat.

You wouldn't be able to find any markings till you took a wire wheel to it to know if it's any good, because it may not be worth the work it needs.

It appears to be a square polled half hatchet but may not be all that hard if it was able to get so mushroomed out.
Half hatchets of all types usually have a hardened poll because they're used in various trades, or for general carpentry...ect. there's so many different kinds for different purposes but most normally have a hardened proper hammer face on the poll.

I would go back and offer them $5-$10 since the poll is so mushroomed.
Tell them you won't be able to determine the maker till you get the rust off, and that with the severe mushrooming that needs some real work there could be an unseen crack somewhere or the steel could just be really soft.
It's an awesome looking hatchet that could potentially be saved and be a real winner, so I think it may be worth a $5-$10

That's kind of what I was thinking. Thanks for the reply. Is this a common size? Seemed smaller than other carpenter's or roofing hatchets I've seen.

It's just small because the poll is missing. I wouldn't give more than $5. With that much damage it just isn't worth fixing.

How old is your son? Vaughan makes some nice mini hatchets.

Definitely, especially the sub zero hatchet though it needs a little work when you get it.

I was thinking the same thing. Their carpenter hatchet is $20 brand new.

My son is almost 6, which I realize my be a little young. He'll certainly be closely supervised and instructed.

I'm hoping to find something that's a little beat up and have him help clean it up and stuff. We went strolling through the woods behind our house last night and he seemed really interested in the machete I was using to clear the path.

My other son is 3, so we're probably going to wait a minute before we let him swing anything more than a foam sword. ;)

That might not be the best idea, because cleaning up a vintage head is best done with a wire cup brush in an angle grinder and that's not exactly safe around a little kid.

The Vaughan sub zero does come with some blue paint on the head and varnish on the handle.
He could help sand and stain the handle.
For the head you'll have to use citristrip and a scraper, but in general I think he could help you with it enough to feel proud of it.
