Tip down Sebbie

Just reading a post by Corwise about Sebbie opening in his pocket has prompted me to ask this question.

Why does CRK not provide a tip down carry option on the Sebbies ?

Just looking at the knife it seems technically possible to do.

Whilst tip up seems very popular, it would be fair to say that tip down would have just as many supporters.

I'm not looking to tell CRK how to build knives. This is simply a question bourne of curiosity and a tiny amount of frustration as I would love my Sebbie to be tip down.

I have posted the question directly to CRK via the contact on their website.

I will post their response.

heh. i called them about 8 years ago to ask the same thing. I spoke to CHris himself, in short because that's how he thinks it should be done.

i called, perhaps two years ago, and asked if they would re-drill for tip down carry.

they declined.

i think having both options, ala rick hinderer, would be ideal.

Though I'll admit I've had the Seb's thumblug catch on a thread on my pocket and open partially on the draw. I've never been bitten, as it were, as I can usually feel the blade opening, but I could see how it could happen.

With a knife the size of the small or large Seb, it's (usually--mileage varies) both faster to open and firmly purchase the folder when tip up. Your thumb finds the thumblug while coming out of the pocket, and as opposed to tip down, where you've gotta rotate the knife in your hand 180 degrees before opening, you've already got a semblance of grip of the Seb when your thumb meets the lug.

If speed of draw ain't that important to you, I'd tend to agree that a tip down Seb would be the way to go.

Professor.

Speed and ease of draw are very important to me. I can draw and open my sebbie without thought and that's the way (un huh un huh) I like it (un huh un huh)!:thumbup:;):)

I fall under the "speed of draw not important, as long as I can do it one handed," so a tip down would be prefered. *shrug* But my sebbie is so nice I'll probably manage somehow anyway. :)

I've been carrying it standard now for so long, I think tip down would feel awkward to me. I can draw it, open it and cut with it effortlessly. Years of muscle memory I guess.

Hi all

Here is the response from CRK. I reckon this is fair enough, I'll just have to get used to tip up

Providing a “tip down” knife is not an item we offer even as a special order. I don’t know if Chris has a reason for his positioning of the tip (he usually does), and he is not here for me to ask as he went to the show. Looking at my Sebenza, I see that if we put the recess for the clip at the other end we would need to machine a new hole. Also, the set up of the back profile as it is does not allow for a recess. We would then need to change the entire configuration of the back to accommodate the recess. While this sounds like a minor change, it would require new programming to be written by our machinist and implemented. While there is a population that may prefer a tip down version, it is just not something we have the resources to pursue at this time. We are a fairly small company (17 employees including the office staff) and we are kept busy with our current orders as well as working on new projects.

ironically, i used to only buy folders that were tip down carry.

but so many makers only offer tip up, crk included. i have since gotten used to tip up and it really makes no difference to me. i still carry differrent folders in each method, but the majority of my folders are now tip up.

go figure.

Good ole dad told me, "an experienced driver should be able to handle any vehicle." Or something like that! I'm used to whatever folder I have on me.
