Tip for faster forum access

Many of you probably know this already, but since there are probably some relatively new forumites like myself out there...

When you want to read a thread, just right click your mouse on it and then select "open in a new window" from the pop-up menu. Then when you want to close it and return to the main forum, your computer doesn't have to re-load the entire forum each time. You simply click the close button on the thread's window to close it, and Voila! This really speeds things up for me, especially on forums with many posts.

Hope this helps.

Rob:
I've been reading these forums for a couple of years, and cursing the wasted time waiting for the forum topic list to reload after reading a thread. You've done me a BIG favor by 'mentioning the obvious'. Thanks!
BTW, I use a Mac computer...only one button on the mouse. For those of you who are button-poor as I am...just clicking on the topic and holding down the Mac Mouse button gives the same popdown menu that Rob describes. (Using Netscape Web browser.)

Thanks Rob. Even the head Luddite can learn something new and understand it.

About to get a DSL line, that's how 'hip' I am.

What -- only two windows??? You must have patience.... I start by opening the first three threads in new windows -- usually by the time I've started the third one loading the first one is fully loaded and ready to read. I close the window when I finish reading a thread and when I've closed all three I'm back in the original window, the topic list, and ready to open three more.

That's when everything is working well -- if for some reason things are running slow I'll open a new thread each time I finish and close one, so I have four windows open at all times and new threads are loading all the time as I read.

If you don't have much ram in your computer opening too many windows can slow things down as your system starts thrashing, but I'm running 32 meg and I often run four windows of netscape, one or two mIRC windows (on different IRC nets), and Bullet Proof FTP in another window all at the same time, and still have enough ram to open a text file or two, or follow links to open one or two more Netscape windows ... sometimes my hard drive starts running too much and I have to close a couple of windows to get the system running fast again, but that doesn't usually happen until I have at least six Netscape windows open -- mIRC doesn't take as much memory as Netscape (actually, few programs take as much memory as a web browser and Netscape takes more than most browsers).

If you're short of memory you might try Opera instead of Netscape. I was using Opera for a while in an old 486 notebook with only 8 meg ram and there didn't seem to be any limit at all to how many windows I could have open simultaneously. I had some stability problems with Opera on that system but YMMV.

Dude, that is so NEAT! I didn't know this, your right it saves loads (pun intended) of time!

Thanks for the tip! Just goes to show ya, you can learn something new everyday!

How do you think of the idea to set the "automatically load image" option off? It drastically decreases the download time, though you have to do right mouse button click and do "show image" or "view image" to see the nice pix in the posts.
Anyways the option change process can be reversed any time, just trying will not hurt...
