Not sure if this is common knowledge already. But the forum has been helpful to me in the past, posting this cause maybe I can pay it forward.

For anybody that wants to fiddle with stabilizing their own scales. O’Reillys auto parts store, “rents” some tools for free. (As long as you return it, there is no charge). They have vacuum pumps for those that service their own AC systems. I just used their vacuum pump to stabilize some bone. The pump pulled to “23”, and I believe the best most pumps on the market pull is “24”. (I just read my gauge, don’t really know what units a vacuum is measured in, just the standard is “24”)

So if you’ve thought of fiddling around with stabilizing wood, bone, antler, etc, and don’t want to pony up, the up front cash to buy the equipment, consider swinging by your local O’Reilly’s

Just a comment, but you can ruin a vacuum pump pulling a vacuum on a tank of resin if you don't build in a proper trap and filters. I would be pretty sure the rental place wouldn't be happy to know what you were using a brake bleeder vac for. Any resin or resin vapors that get pulled into the pump will cure eventually, freezing the pump and valves up.
