Tip for the George Forge

Hey all. I know alot of folks are using forge plans that Indian George was so nice to pass around or something similar. The forges work great but, for some time I'd get a billet on occasion that didn't get more than 95% on the welds. I know George and others use their forges at 3-4 psi for welding where I was using 7-8 psi. I wanted to torqe the heat up just a bit more. I had already tried everything else to fix the problem. I don't know if it's the area I'm in (elavation) or my fuel or what but, I was talking to Ed Caffrey and he gave me a tip on extending the piping for more air/fuel mix and using a smaller oriface opening. Man did that do the trick. I added a few elbows and two 12" pieces of pipe, then put a new oriface cap in with a 1/16" hole. I damn near burned a billet up yesterday. I haven't had that problem since was forging with coal. If anyone needs a bit more heat, I hope this helps.

That's a good tip J. Glad you mentioned it. It's one of those tips I read about, thought I'd try, filed it away in my mind and promptly forgot about! :o

I'm not a forge builder, let alone any kind of mechanical genius (don't even know if I just spelled that right) but, this has been driving me nuts for several months. I'm sure alot of others knew this trick but, I just thought I'd throw it out there. Sure can't hurt, right?

seems like we went into this sometime ago, I believe the extra length was allowing
a better F/Air mix. is that duct tape I see there Jay :D

sure Don pete that qualifies as a duct right  :)

jay, if your using chicken wire.. it must be a ford :footinmou :D

You guessed it, Dan! Seriously though, there are so many damn deer up here I went through three grills in one year. So I said the heck with it and put up wire. The trucks camo'ed anyway, who's going to see it? ;) :D

Yep, the plans/parts list are on Dan's site, I'm pretty sure. If not, I can send them to you.

I'll be happy to thin out those nasty old deer for you J.

Come on up Peter/Don. We'll eat some good beef steaks, throw some sparks and take down some deer.

J, I may have to think about building one of those once I get my forge off the deck. Which may be sooner than I think. Laura just offered to spend our vacation helping me build a hot shop! Just not sure If I can get some concrete down soon enough. I start this weekend. Off all next week and the following Monday.....
