dont let your 16 year old friend take your computer apart just cause its old and slow and he tells you that for a hundred bucks you can get more ram and a bigger faster hard drive....dont do it....

Depending on how old and how slow that computer is, it probably doesn't pay to do anything with it. Computer tech changes so rapidly that very often there's such a big case of diminshing returns that it doesn't pay to bother. For example my VCR went on the fritz, I could have it fixed, starts at $75 an hour plus parts. A new one is around $100. Most old pc's are only good as anchors and not very good ones at that.
