Passivation of stainless steel after blasting will help remove carbon and blast material off from the surface of the steel . This makes for better rust resistance. Just mix a 5 percent solution of muratic acid in water and heat to 150 deg.
Then place the blade in the solution for 5 mins.
Take it out and nuturalize in a solution of baking soda and water for a few mins.
Clean and oil.
USE CAUTION>>> FOLLOW SAFTEY RULES FOR THESE MATERIALS!

Darrel,
You are right about the passivation and rust prevention!! I use a passivation process at work. All of our products are stainless and are used in the citrus processing industry.
The system at work uses caustic soda instead of the acid you mentioned, followed by several rinses in baking soda then de-ionized water. I do my blades in it that I tumble finish or sandblast. It gives them a nice uniform finish in addition to removing surface impurities!
The caustic soda is fun to "play" with! It gives Aluminum and Ti. a unique finish. The fun part is that the material fizzes like an Alka Seltzer when you put it in the tank!!!!!

Thanks for sharing this info Darrel and Neil!!! I bet I have over 100 knife books, and not a single one mention this process. Atleast I haven't notice it in one. Should this be done only to bead or sand blasted blades, or would it be beneficial to all our stainless blades?? Take care! Michael

Hey guys, what about passivation for 1095? I ask because I happen to have the muritic on hand. Would it help inhibit rust on high carbon?
