Don't even try to center punch it!

I have been having fun with the first few Talonite knives I'm working on. After I profiled them, no big deal....I layed out my hole patern on the tangs, picked up my hammer and center punch...OUCH no more point!

It's weird how a material that grinds easy will KILL a center punch!
Thought I would share my fun with everyone,
Neil

I like to use a dremel with a diamond engraving burr to lay out patterns.I get the cheap ones since the diamonds wear off eventually anyway. They don't wear out to fast.

Hi Neil, if you get a few 50BMG AP and pull the core out, you can make center punches that will work for you.

DUH.......
Sorry Jake, it's early

I got it now, pull the core out of the AP bullet,Yup that would work. I have several carbide gauge pins I have been using for scribes.I will make a center punch out of one of the 3/16" dia ones. Thanks for the idea anyway!

Weird stuff huh Doc!

You would think at the 47 to 49 rockwell you could drill and punch it but no cigar! I use a carbide spade bit and my peeper glasses to start holes.

Rob,
I got it down now! Carbide center punch that I don't dare hit to hard and a #2 carbide C-drill to englarge the centerpunch marks!
The material IS a bit different. I keep thinking as I'm working with it, I'll do that after heat treat

Then I remember.......NO HEAT TREAT!!!

actually i didnt mean a carbide center punch. too brittle...but carbide everything else....i just put an x with a carbide scribe. it doesnt seem to want to skate around like hss when i drill a hole...always start them with a carbide center drill i bought....double sided...has lasted about 15 knives so far...good luck.....i guess if you wanted a nice center punch hole you could used the 50 cal from 30 yds....

by the way neil...i noticed a couple of posts back you had the number 666 next to your name...have you noticed any funny little bumps popping up in the back of your head or an unusual desire to rule the world??

Tom,
The # of the BEAST..... I hadn't noticed that or I would have mentioned it in the post!!The bumps on my head are no longer little!

But....My wife wont even let me rule the house, let alone the world!

Darrel,
I have been using spade drills also. One of the knives has 3/8" holes through the tang and handle material. The Damn G10 is tougher on the carbide than the Talonite

. I've had two diamond cup wheels in my tool box for about 15 years. I have a cheap grinder on order from Grizzly that will be my new carbide grinder. I used to just take the dull carbide to work. Now I need this capability in my own shop!
