I have for quite some time been using over-sized drill bits for drilling through the tang and handle material. Doing so prevents having to ream the holes or sand the pins. I use the following for the pin size stated.
pin size drill bit
3/32 (.0937) #41 (.0960)
1/8 (.1250) #30 (.1285)
5/32 (.1562) #21 (.1590)
1/4 (.2500) F (.2570)
On the F size bit, I just use it to drill through the tang, not the scales, 7 thousandths is bit much. The others seem to work OK.
Another forumite (I don't remember who)uses a micrometer to measure the actual pin size and then buys that size drill bit and tapes it to that pin for later use.
