Tip of the day

Phillip and I spent the morning at a lumber company looking for the right piece of wood for a handle. My tip of the day is this:

If you want to obtain the right handle material, you have to see it before you buy it. Don't rely on someone else to select it for you then ship it to you. They won't take the time to pick out the perfect piece. This goes for wood, stag, pearl, etc.

Barry-

This is a good tip and one that should be appreciated by all.

The only acception I have found to this is the people at Gilmer Wood in Portland, OR.

Fortunately, I live only a short drive away and can go pick out what I like. But Jim deals with a lot of knife-makers and knows what we like and does do a good job of picking out material.

BUT, I still agree, go look before you buy.

Especially if we're talking about something like a piece of snakewood that's enough for 3 handles and it costs $300

Hi Barry
I am a new maker and appreciate the tip.
I also just spent 20 minutes looking at your grinds [big sigh goes here].
You do GREAT! work

Thanks guys.

Dave,
I can't take all of the credit for our grinds. Phillip does quite a bit of it.

Nick,
I'll bet that snakewood looks fantastic. I've had an expensive block of snakewood I bought 5 years ago. Haven't come up with the right knife to put it on.

Rob,
What wood is that? Looks Awesome.
