i'm considering replacing my edc delica with either a paramilitary or a mini manix. i've heard that the manix has a slender tip for such a heavy duty folder and was wondeirng how the three compare in tip thickness (delica, mini manix, and para). if someone could shed some light on this it would be much appreciated. pics of the three together would be great. i consider a strong tip very crucial to my edc and my delica has never let me down.

thanks

What will you use the tip for when using the knife? If you don't do much poking or proding I would suggest looking at the Spyderco Rescue model which has a blunt tip but tons of cutting edge. It is one ugly knife that I seem to be of the few to like it, but man it can sure cut stuff with that Spyderedge.

i need the tip for penetration and also don't care for serrations. i've narrowed it down to the ones listed above because they meet my preferences for general utility, lock strength, and handle material.

As I sit here and type, I don't have the knives in front of me so that I could just give you the numbers but. The following things should be considered. The Manix/Mini-Manix has a distal taper while the Delica doesn't, but the Manix starts at a blade thickness of 4 mm while the Delica has a bladethickness of about 2.5 mm. On the Delica the saberlike hollow grind tapers down to the tip. So the will be a point on the blade were the Delica tip and the Manix tip are the same thickness (from memory I would say that occures at about 0.5-0.75 in from the tip). Behind that point (closer to the handle) the blade of the Manix becomes quickly thicker than that of the Delica. Towards the tip the blade thickness is about the same for both the Manix and the Delica, because both taper at that point towards the tip. The Manix tip will still be stronger, because the blade ist quite a bit wider than that of the Delica.

Lastly, while Cliff stated at one point (correctly) that the tip of the Manix is fragile, this was in comparison to the brutishness of the rest of the knife and in comparison to other tactical folders, not on an absolute scale. He also punshed the tip of the Manix through a can cutting an X into the lit.....

I tend to agree with Cliff on that. (No really! ;) ) As much as I love my Manix, that tip is a weak point, both literally and figuratively. It's not bad compared to the Delica or ParaMillie, but compared to other folders I use for rough stuff, like the CRKT M21-04 & M16-04, Ryan Model Seven, and Buck/Strider Tarani, it's pretty flimsy out there near the end. Add to that the reputed brittleness of S30V, and you won't see me prying with my Manix anytime soon!

As for the Delica, even Spyderco acknowledges that that pointy hollow-ground tip can be a problem; the new 'fourth generation' Delica and Endura will have a blunter tip profile borrowed from the Salt series, for a stronger tip.

I just got the chance to see one of those Mini Manix knives. There is nothing mini about that beast. Go with the Para-Military. Thats the one I like better between the two personally. Unless you just like big knives that is. The Manix is pretty much similar to the Para Mil. They both have similar blades but the PM just isn't as noticed in the pocket. I do like lockbacks better than the compression though as far as ease of use. The compression is still a bit awkward at times to me but I'm sure it is like anything. Once you get used to it I'm sure it is fine.
