Some of you might already know this but I discovered it all by myself tonight. When I sand the flats of a knife, I use a Metal Surface plate. Every once in a while I will slip and my fingers hit the sandpaper and eventually the tips of my fingers bleed.. By accident tonight, while sanding some blades I happened to put a magnetic strip, from Sheffields Knife Supply...on my work bench next to the surface plate, and it hit me..If I put the blade on the magnetic strip and lay the blade on the sandpaper, it act like a suction, keeping the blade flat to the table and I have a nice big handle to push down on. No Bloody finger tips.. As James Brown said "I FEEL GOOD":!:D :D :D

Good one Rene. I use a piece of masking tape rolled backwards sticky side out and a wooden block which you'll see in the video. There's always more tricks! :)

Rene after doing it this way
when your blade gets magnetized you can make a
_demagnetizer with and old electric motor.
_ it's a real pain if the metal grit sticks to the blade.:(

Dan, how are you making the demagnetizer out of an old motor? I think most of the hand tools in my shop need to be demagnetized.

Dan,
My brother made me a demagnetizer, it's a low voltage one, the cool thing about it is that I can leave it on and it doesn't overheat, like a regular demagnetizer. I hate my brother because he thinks like Indian George, they take sh*t and make something out of it. I hate people like that...they make me feel stupid.

Yes take the amature out of a AC brushless motor
with out the compasitor..aaahh  I can't spell it.
build a wooden frame in side to keep your blade or tool
from being drawn to the windings, plug her in and run the part though.

Bob warner used the magnetic clutches from old car air conditioner compressers for a mag chuck, he said they have something like 400 lbs. of hold down power. Wach your fingers:eek:

Dan,
I am not good with this stuff, but I believe it is a 110v to 12volt transformer. He then built a coil of wires wraped in a circle and we used that plastic dip stuff (like on a pair of pliers) to conceal the circle of wires...if this makes any sense to you. When I see him I'll find out what he did. It works really sweet, thats all I know.:D

I just CS'd out, and got one from MSC. Been using it for 20 years. It's the type that you can just pull the stuff across the top and thats is.
I thought all knifemakers had demagnatizers?;)
