I am ordering a Victor Journeyman set and need to order a couple additional tips. Just wondering what size tips you all find most useful for silver brazing? Also, what is a good assortment for cutting, without buying every number on the chart?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

If I were buying I would get a #0 for brazing small stuff and a #2 for larger brazing jobs. You'll probably find yourself using the 0 the most. For cutting chores you can cut up to 3/4 inch with a properly adjusted torch and a 0 cutting tip. I use mostly a 00 cutting tip for all my work.

Thanks Guys.

Bill, What sort of stuff are you cutting with the 00? I was thinking I'd be cutting thinner stuff with chop and band saws, and saving the torch for thick stuff (?).

Also, what sort of rod (% silver, diameter, etc.) do you recommend for silver brazing?

Thanks again,

John

John,

I use silver brazing rod with from 75 to 95 % silver. the common rods you can get from a welding supply and the very high silver content rod from a specialty store like rio grande or IJC. The reason is for the diffrent melting temps and the color of the filler.

As for cutting tips; the 00 tip is listed for cutting 1/8 inch to 5/16 inch material. I have found that with careful regulation of the gasses and proper adjustment that I can cut up to 5/8 plate and that is about the heaviest steel that I cut. I can make a cut with this set up that will rival a plazma tourch in quality. unless I scew up I have no clean up to do after cutting as there is very little slag or burnt metal clinging to the cut edge.
