Tip up and long handles

So when carrying tip up I've noticed with longer handled knives that after drawing from the pocket my hand is near the butt of the handle and far from the studs making deployment difficult

What techniques do y'all use to getcher mitts choked up on your knife and ready to deploy?

depends on knife, hands, pockets, etc. You can usually wave larger folders with good thumb studs easily if you are wearing jeans.

Also you can reach your thumb in your pocket as deep as it can go and keep your index finger straight while pulling out the knife like you are drawing a pistol, just using your thumb and middle, ring, pinky fingers - then your index finger goes to the top and thumb drives into the thumb stud to pop it open.

You can also do a little inertia opening by grabbing it naturally and taking it out of your pocket then do a quick whip action with your wrist down then up or inside then outside.

+1. I also wave my knives so that makes it a non-issue.

Some people also add fobs so that they have more to grab on to

Ironically most complain more about how much of the knife handle sticks up out of the pocket when clipped than the grip aspect of how where the clip is mounted affects the purchase of the handle by the hand and fingers to get hold of it.

Fortunately the hand is very adaptable and most adjust. I would say there are brands out there that adjust the mounting of their clip for defensive purposes so that the clip is positioned optimum for defense grips with the hand just where it should be when the folder is extracted. Waved knives, and models such as the Lapu Lapu Corto and others of this ilk are a few examples.

People hate them! Is that irony for you? The clips are positioned where they should be for best draw for self defense and people want the clips moved or the clip style changed to a low rider which ultimately changes the way the folder is gripped unless you make adjustments to your usual draw technique once you switch the clip over. I've sold low riders to guys using Waved knives. I didn't like it and don't really feel they go well together but some agree, some adjust and feel it is still quite doable even with the low rider fold over style clips used. Again, the hand is very adaptable.

I carry tip down on all my larger handled knives for that reason.

1. See above.

2. I usually just let the knife slide through my grip a bit, which is a little bit risky but I don't have too much trouble. Lately I've been opening my larger blades (5"+) with two hands though.

I have noticed the same thing. I see videos on youtube of people drawing and opening their knives tip-up and I think there is some slight of hand where they reposition the knive in their hands then open it, and they don't mention that step in their description. All of my older knives are tip-down and they are positioned exactly where they need to be when drawing. A few years ago I bought a Benchmade mini-grip to use as a beater and it comes tip-up only. But it is a bit shorter and I have long hands, so when drawing it my thumb is positioned where I can reach the thumb stud with only a slight repositioning of the knife in my hand. A longer folder just won't work that way, and a deep carry clip makes it that much worse. I'm to the point where I won't even consider buying a knife if it is tip-up only.
