Tip-up carry for the Kershaw Spec Bump

Hi, new to this side of the forums, but I like what I'm seeing! Great stuff that you are doing STR. Anyways, as my title states, would it be possible to drill and tap holes in the Kershaw Spec Bump for tip-up carry? This is the sole reason which prevents me from buying the knife, as I will not carry tip down for fear of dropping the knife, it coming open, etc. If so, how much would this cost?
You can find a few good pictures of the clip if you image search the spec bump on google, as I don't have any of my own.

Thank you!

Been there done that my friend. See the link below.

Many people feel as you do. It depends on what pocket you carry your folder in. If the front pocket in the corner I have never had any problem carrying my folders tip up carry with the blade tucked neatly in the corner of my pocket. If a back pocket well, it can open from gravity if the pocket is not there to physically block the blade and the detent ball does not work if its a liner lock. In most lockbacks its not a big deal and with most torsion spring AKA Speed Safe assisted opening folder from Kershaw there is enough spring tension keeping the point down so long as the spring is functioning. If it breaks its risky to carry some of the models and important that you get it fixed pronto to avoid an accidental blade opening in the pocket.

By the way, welcome to the forums and thanks for coming in and checking out my forum and for asking. Feel free to look around and ask more questions if you see anything that strikes a nerve. We like company here.

Sorry that I didn't make it quite clear--I carry tip-up because it is blocked as well. One time, it did open up when I had it tip down. (a blur--cut me, but only the top layer of skin)
I also like how you can grab the knife and deploy it when it is tip-up.

Wow, I didn't know someone else had asked for this before. I was wondering, however, if the spec bump pocket clip would fit for tip-up carry. I really like the design of the pocket clip that came with the knife.
Thanks again!

Well its curved out the wrong way and so wide that it would leave a lot of folder sticking up out of the pocket which as I recall was why I looked for an alternative clip.

I have a bag full of ZT clips so it may work. I'll not know for sure until it gets here. I could always custom make a clip for it too. More $ but it will sometimes fit better in places I need to fit it and I can put the holes where I need them instead of having to make due.

Thank you STR, I'll bump this thread once I get the knife. I would prefer a black ZT clip (if it would fit, we'll see)--it goes a lot better with the rest of the knife. I like your custom clips a lot, but my budget probably could not handle the extra $. Do you mind me asking how much the other guy spent for the chive pocket clip and drilling and tapping?

Thank you for all of your suggestions and help, and have a great day!

I don't recall. I think it was like $20 shipped. I threw the clip in which I'd do for you also. Kershaw keeps me stocked on extra parts for a lot of their folders so its no big deal there. On the price, most of that is for having to create the flat spot on this folder so the clip sits as it should, and for shipping it home, and for the threader and the drill bits since the hardened stainless liners most often dull at least the one drill but good. I need to thread the hole the correct size for the threader or its very easy to break it off in the hole. Actually its risky even with the correct size depending on the thickness of the liner I'm threading. I usually have to use a cobalt #53 drill bit to drill the hole first when I'm drilling something like the hardened stainless liners in that particular folder and then I follow it with the right size #48 drill since I have not had any luck whatsoever trying to find a #48 cobalt drill. Using HSS regular drill bits in hardened stainless is a good way to basically ruin even a new bit or at least make it so its only good for soft materials after that. So I usually just charge the customers for them to cover the bases figuring I'll probably ruin it or maybe break at least one tapper. When I don't its nice but it happens too often so I just add that in automatically these days.

That seems very reasonable to me, thanks! Once I get the knife, would you prefer to have me bump this thread or just send it with the details?
