Howdy folks! I decided 2012 would be the year to expand my collection of Traditional patterns, but it wasn't until the bottom quarter that I started to focus on this goal. Thought I'd share a pic of my humble collection to date:

trad01.jpg

Far left: GEC Tidioute #25 Jack, GEC #25 Easy Open Jack.
Top: Case American Workman Sod Buster, Case Mini CopperLock, Case Sway Back Gent.
Far right: Opinel #6 Carbon, Opinel #7 Inox.
Bottom: Rough Rider Half-Whittler in pearl/abalone, Boker Tree Brand Beer Barrel Whittler, Case Small Texas Jack CV, Boker Tree Brand Beer Barrel Canoe, Rough Rider Lockback Canoe, Buck 055.

*I have an assortment of SAKs that are not in the photo. I love 'em but tend to think of them as belonging to their own special category.

I have a long way to go but I feel I have a couple of solid pieces. On the radar for 2013: Chambriard Compact Juniper, Cognet Squirrel, EKA Swede 88 Masur Birch, Fontenille-Pataud Corsican Vendetta Juniper, Mercator K55K, Sheffield A.Wright Sheepsfoot Stag, GEC Northfield (undecided--so many beautiful patterns!) I also hope 2013 will bring my first custom Traditional order to fruition: a Doctor's Pattern in mammoth ivory from the workshop of Mr. Mike Alsdorf (I placed my order last year but Mike's a busy fella--good things take time, I reckon.)

Anyway, thanks for looking! I'd sure appreciate any suggestions/recommendations towards my collection for 2013!

Nice group you have there. I bet you're looking forward to the Corsican Vendetta, those are beauties. Don't forgot to share that one when you get it.

You sure have chosen well!

(That's code for, you have many of the knives that I have and/or like. Heh.)

Well thought out, not a poor knife there and that takes some doing in the early stages!

What's a Cognet Squirrel???

Consider the GEC 73 a mainstay pattern of theirs.

Any single-spring 2 blade knife, there's an art to doing them well. CASE Pen is cheap and very good, GEC 57 Half Whitt is terribly good!

Regards, Will

Nice bunch of Traditionals :)

What you should get, is a german traditional. A nice lockback from Friedrich Hartkopf (preferably ebony) would be nice ;) A Hubertus, Otter or Böker would be nice, too. As Will mentioned above, a single spring 2-blade penknife would be nice - search for Hartkopf and Carl Schlieper (Eye Brand Knives) has them in store, too.

@Will: A Cognet Squirrel is a DoukDouk with a squirrel punched on the handle, a little smaller and mostly in 420 steel (stainless) - a good ol' DoukDouk should also be on your list...

It be a Douk Douk L'Ecureuil (or "squirrel" in English)... ETA: Thanks Andi--you're quick on the draw, sir!

Thanks to all for the kind comments!

No problem, Will - Cognet is the maker of the DoukDouk knives in general - just wanted to add.

Thanks again! Now the etymology of 'Squirrel' interests me.....'Ecureuil' of course is the French word, should've seen that, similar to the German word, and to one of the two national languages here Swedish - 'Ekorre'. But squirrel??? Old Norman French word 'Escurel':D

Back to the knives, a stainless Douk-Douk certainly interests me. As do the squirrels etched on GEC stainless blades....

Brett,
you do already have a nice bunch of knives...but we all understand why you're willing for more...
As for your radar, you have many interesting options, but to my eyes none of them can beat the Chambriard Compact...for the simple reason that it's on my radar as well, and I do think that I might get one sooner or later...

It's a beautiful folder, for sure! I could order one today but I insist on the juniper (which my vendor is currently out of stock...:() A more aggressive search may reveal another source though!

Funny, even though I'm in Europe, the Juniper version seems to be hard to find at the moment. Maybe seasonal shortage?

The stag version I have is just the right size for food tasks and the usual everyday routine, VDC very decent carry.

EKA's in general are pretty well made and feature grand blade steel. I only have experience with there 12C27 Sandvik (the bare bones utilitarian Swede 38) though and not their Carbon. The Swede 88 is a nice knife by all means, but has a certain style to it that's just well..... Scandinavian and I dig it. It's not a hard use folder by any means, but is quite light and has a nice thin blade profile that's great for cutting lighter stuff.
