So does anyone have some tips for fighting in a padded stick, padded gear stickfighting tournament? Is anyone here entering the tournament in Hawaii on September 16, 2000.

Chad,

It will probably be padded gear and a thin(7/8") rattan stick. One tip is to do some cardio training. If it's similar to WEKAF fighting, it will be three intense 1 minute rounds. Another tip is to give the opponent as much strikes as possible. It's totally different from the way you and the Dog Brothers fight. You'll be at medio and corto range most of the time. Mix up the strikes to the head and body. The body strikes "sound" better because of the armor. That might help you win a match. Also pace yourself(something I have a hard time doing). Don't waste all your energy in the first round.

Oh, they won't allow strikes below the thighs or thrusts if they are going by WEKAF rules.

Well, unfortunately, it will be with pillowed sticks. Padded sticks and full padded body. No thrust, no punyos, no grabbing weapons, no hits below the waist. It's a first for me.

Wow! That's even more restrictions than the WEKAF fighting rules. Geez...

Hi Chad, those are some real restrictive rules.

Okay, besides medio corto range you might run into "Zorro". This guy will abanico and redondo you like an machine gun. If he's smart he'll actually try to hit the arms and head etc. He's trying to drive you back to deal with his shots. Often folks stand square and become like tree trunks.

I call the guy Zorro because he literally stands totally sideways to you, upright, and keep his empty hand back and flacid. That hand is literally hanging there doing NOTHING!

Zorro might also try to switch grips and abaniko/redondo you because his hand is tired. So he walks toward you, turns sideways and repeats.

Point competitions are fun, you get "the Exploder", "the Toe Tapper, "Underhand Harry".

The Exploder stands still then does a DB take off and hits you with a backhand.
Toe Tapper inches toward you and delivers an overhead strike to the top of your foot. You'll probably hit his head but the ref will call his point FIRST.
Underhand Harry from a low forehand position tries to draw you out. You take a swing and he hits you from underneath and comes back with a backhand. One guy nearly won a tournament doing this.

Chad,

I've never been in one of these tournaments, but from what I've heard from those who have (including the above), my question would be ... what is your goal? Do you want to fight well or do you want to win the tournament? It seems the two are mutually exclusive in this case.

Or are you looking to recruit some fresh meat ... er, um ... new fighters for your own "fun & games" on sundays?

Best of luck!

Dave.
