Tips for minimizing pattern distortion?

I'm working on a mosaic pattern that I want to stay super regular and geometric, but it also involves compressing it down to 1" bar and four-waying it repeatedly. Does anyone have any tips for how to forge a bar to try to keep the Damascus lines relatively straight instead of having them get crushed and wiggly?
 
Sorry for the delay, but you could also use rounded dies, and being careful with forging (even bites every squish, kiss blocks help) you can move the metal like a rolling mill.
Ask a blacksmith how to do something and you'll get a few different answers....
