Hello , fellow new sebenza owners
After owning my sebenza 21 , for a week now . And reading around the forums. I have noticed that there's a lot of posts about people being underwhelmed or having difficulty with their knife . For most this is their first high end production knife , as it was for me . I also experienced a lot of the similar difficulties at first . But I loved this knife and was damned and determined to figure it out . And I have and here's my theory of where mine and probably a lot of others problems start . And a few tips on how I overcame them . I think news owners troubles start not so much with to high expectations. As they come to the sebenza with preset ideas of what it is and how it should function . They come at it as I did . My only other experience with thumb studs is a benchmade 943 . So I went at the sebenza as if it were a 943 . And ran into problems , this knife is a different animal . So my first piece of advise to new owners is.approach this knife as the unique piece of cutlery that it is . Get to know it , learn it's ways . Don't expect it to be like your paramilitary 2. At first that pointy thumb stud tore my thumb up . Because I was trying to actuate it like I did my benchmade. Here's what I came up with . As with the benchmade, don't use the flesh just below your nail . Come at it with your thumb at 90°angle rest your nail on the stud push up and out at a 45°angle ... very simple with a little practice .. what really tore up my thumb was disengaging the lock bar . What I was doing was pushing straight across at a 90° angle . My thumb was raw . Here's how I figured out how to do it , smooth and easy no pain . Rest your thumb flat on the lick bar . Where it sits in the middle of your thumb . And push at a 45°angle walla smooth, easy and painless. If you're have that problem grab your knife right now and try it . You can thank me later lol. I have gotten pretty good at it now . I can flick it open now it doesn't open with the snap of my paramilitary or 943 . It just sweetly glides open and locks into place . I heard this voids your warranty . I think that's BS if it can't handle that , it doesn't deserve it's reputation as a rock solid worker . That be like buying a Lamborghini and being told that if you drive over 60mph it voids your warranty . I call bullshit . Anywho , I hope I have helped some people to not give up on their knife . Happy cutting y'all .

2 more things I forgot to mention . When disengaging the lock bar .be very careful not to put any pressure on the spine of the knife . I found even the slightest pressure make it hard to disengage the lock . If your new to liner locks , remember not to push the lock bar with your fingers as your disengaging with your thumb ...

Here's another tip. If you buy the knife new or in new condition, but intend to use it, go ahead and put the first scratch on it. If you get that out of the way the next scratches won't bother you.

So would you pull a trailer with a large front loader, loaded on the bed with your Lamborghini?

I was with you on most of your tips till I got to your Lamborghini comment. Warranty issues are best addressed to the manufacturer.

How you/we use or abuse our knives is an open debate around here.

Fair enough mike .. maybe not the best analogy. I'm not advocating using wrist action and slamming the knife open . I don't do that with any of my knives . Just a gentle thumb flick , I think it can handle it ...

Sweet looking knives by the way ... what are the inserts made of ? I went with the ebony . My one and only beloved Gibson has an ebony finger board and bridge . That's why I chose that . My guitar has a beautiful rosewood back and sides . If I ever get another chris reeve knife I'll go with rosewood ...

@panzeron Yes...that works as the knife gets used. I just don't do any flicking at all with any CRK knife. I've got my ZTs and Hinderer knives for that.

I got ya ... I don't abuse my knives either . I'm not slamming it into the blade stop . I have zt 562cf also , great knife ... what hinderer model do you have ? Custom or production? How does zt compare to hinderer ? .. I am eyeing a production xm 18 bowie ... damn that blade looks sweet ...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Mr. Reeve doesn't think any folder should be flicked open (other that a flipper). He also has been heard saying that these knives are a tool, not a stress relief device.

My opinion is that if any knife can handle flicking, it would be the Sebenza. Whether or not it voids the warranty, I have yet to hear of someone being denied repair due to flicking. CRK will always stand behind their product.

Another good write up. Thanks for the contribution.

I have several XM18 production. Since we're in the Chris Reeves section I won't share photos or specifics here. I will say this, once I got my hands on a Hinderer I sold most of my ZTs to fund more CRK and Hinderer purchases.

Thank you corskin. .. I agree I think this knife can handle it . I do draw a distinction between a gentle thumb flick and hard wrist action slamming it against the blade stop . I don't abuse my knives . I was kind of offended by eyedog ,commin in here and taking the moral high ground . "I don't flick my sebenza's, that's what my hinderer and zt's are for" .. good for you ... sorry , I'm just the kind of guy that speaks my mind .. then when I tried to be civil and start a conversation. He disappears ... just stopped in to let me know he's a more refined , civilized knife user I guess ...

Hey man I never disappeared. You're a new Sebenza owner. Good for you. You provided some helpful info. Good for you.

I am sure no expert on CRK knives. But I've owned a bunch over the years and was only expressing my thoughts.

It's a great knife to love. Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Both of those are Box Elder Burl.

I'll speak my mind . But I'll also admit when I'm wrong . I jumped the gun . I didn't see that you did respond eyedog . I'm sorry

And right , that's your opinion. I stated my opinion. But you have to admit you did come at me with a condescending tone ...

I didn't read that a condescending at all. It is a common sentiment expressed here in regards to having a ZT to flick instead of a CRK. It's actually fair advice IMO.

Eyedog , maybe I was a little sensitive and took your point the wrong way . No hard feelings on this side and respect and semper fi , thanx for your service. .

I'll add that it is valuable to have the opinions expressed from those who are new to CRK. I think it is fair to assume that a lot of us have forgot about some of those details as we are now completely used to CRK and our thumbs are now broken in :D. So, again, thank you for your contributions.

FWIW, Chris Reeve used to post here years ago. If you search under the username "Chris Reeve" you can see some of his posts. I found them very informative. Also, check out the thread I started titled " CRK Videos". Those are good to watch as well.

Thanx for the kind words ... sad that this post got off track .. and +1 in the breaking in of the thumbs lol
