Tips for selling knives on Bladeforums

I finally moved up to Gold membership. I have a bunch of knives I want to sell off as I get to it. Please give me any tips about how to have a good, hassle free sale where everybody is pretty happy.

How do you determine a price? Is there a lot of haggling that goes on?
What's the best way to ship? How much does it usually cost?
Payment: I've got paypal, but is that the best way to get paid. How do you actually get the money from paypal? I'm not set up to take credit cards. Do people do money orders? How long does it take for a personal check to clear?

I wanted to post this here, because I've dealt with several Cantina members in sales and never ever had a problem. Thanks.

Did I say "Pics"?

Price is determined by demand. I have a knife here that I haven't been able to give away....:(.....there's no demand for it.

Don't expect to "get out of it what you got in it".

Haggling is ok, but "low-balling" is not. Do NOT accept a low-ball offer. And your best response to any offer you don't want is something along the lines of "I respectfully decline. Thank you."

I ship all my knives USPS Priority Mail. Acceptable standard. If they're large/heavy/expensive - I prefer FedEx. Cheaper, and they're good for the insurance claim should something go wrong.

Paypal is a great way to get paid. If someone asks me if they can pay with paypal, I ask them to cover the 3% fee. If I need the money now, I'll eat the 3% fee.

It's standard procedure in a swap, for both parties to ship/mail at the same time.

If somebody wants to use a personal check, hold the knife until the payment clears. Make that clear upfront, though. Usually takes 2 business days for a check to clear.

Don't accept Western Union payments except from those you trust.

Be sure to keep all communication "upfront and friendly". Assume (and expect) the best.

Well, that's my policy anyways...

(note: I handle knife trades/swaps differently than outright sales of my knives)

give? i'm all ears ;)

my 2 cents... dan is ON da money... but i have some thoughts.

the item. have something to sell that probably someone wants. learn the rules of the forumboard/etc, some places have harsh rules (like links), and other such.

the client. invariably someone will contact you. scope them out. search on the forum. stand up guy? crook? good, bad, ugly might give you a hint. "dude is AAA++++ all the way" to "the dude forges money order, beware!".

pics. get a free hosting account, there's several. i like imageshack. free. really. take many good photos.

email. get a free email account just for selling - keep the spam and traffic local to that. i like gmail. it's free, it's good, it's searchable (the feds want to know all ;>)

communicate. BE POLITE but not a pushover. don't ignore emails and phone calls (WHAT? you gave them your phone? are you crazy?). talk to your client(s). assure them. be chatty if you want, but don't go nuts either... minimum basic: "i accept your offer", "your payment has cleared/arrived", "your package is shipped on this date, via this method, here's a conf #, should arrive in N to M days or so (prevents them from assuming it's instant shipping ;>)"... if they keep writing back within the shipping period, DO assure them, once, that it was shipping, and they should contact you in M+2 days or something...

description. write up a good solid description. be honest of any flaws. some people are very upfront and even offer a 5-7 day refund policy. others are "no refunds, no way"

money. goto a few shops and find out how much your item sells for. pick a price you want that's realistic. i always include shipping, fees, everything in the price. just name one price, too many complications messes up the deal. i do paypal. i'll take a [postal] money order but i'll wait 2-3 weeks. i do NOT take personal checks unless i've dealt with the person a bunch in some way, and that's the best way for them/me.

shipping. usually usps flat rate shipping, priority, very rarely express. ALWAYS delivery conf, insurance often extra if client wants it (or it's part of the price...) USPS provides free boxes, and for very heavy items that fit in the box, have cheap one price flat rates. i've never used fed ex for personal needs, but they're good too. ups sadly, cannot be trusted imho... too many stories and issues....

packing: free boxes if you go with usps... otherwise, use a good box. reinforce every single edge with GOOD tape. if you're paranoid, use anti-tamper tape over THAT. tape your labels down too. put a copy of the addresses inside the box. speaking of inside... knives are sharp. wrap that puppy well, take no chances it can de-sheath, or for gawds sake, if there is no sheath, wrap the blade with SOMETHing to keep it poking through, cutting itself out. this box WILL be dropped. put something over the tip and the edge. then wrap it again. plenty of bubble wrap or other packing materials. you should be able to shake your package and hear NOTHING move. really. i'm nutso about that. a customer should have to WORK to get their item ;) but really, i've never had anyway have an issue with something lost, or crunched, and i never want to.

feedback. there's a feedback mechanism usually on your forum/site of choice. use it. good/fantastic, bad/horrible. try to negotiate with the client first.

kaching!

trades go about the same way, just that you have to trust the other person... and you're good.

but mostly, have fun, can't think of much more...

1. ALWAYS look up your buyer in TGTBATU. If you're a member on several forums, you might poke around.
2. ALWAYS describe EXACTLY what you're selling and, if possible, provide pictures. Don't try to hide blemishes or wear marks. Examine your knives to see if there are any imperfections, then report them all. Honesty is the best policy on that.
3. Be specific as to how you will ship, how you expect to be paid, and when all of this will take place.
4. If you need to delay shipping, tell the person honestly why. Most people will be fine with it.
5. Communicate well and frequently.
6. Ship DELIVERY CONFIRMATION!!!

Thanks for the great info. I feel like I'm ready to start as soon as I figure out the image shack and pics deal. I always liked pics before buying something.

Pictures: don't take pictures of dark knives against a dark background. Don't take pictures of anything against a complex background.

Here's another picture question. If I take a picture with a digital camera and load it onto my computer, can I post a pic directly or do I need to have an imageshack type host?

Gold members can upload pics direct to BFC.

Re. above comments:

Excellent points by all; emphasis is on politeness and fast responses. I email when I ship and also when I receive. I also ask the recipient to drop me a note to let me know when he has received my shipment.

One more thing I do that was not mentioned above: I always give a 3-day, no-questions-asked return policy.
