Tips for sharpening softer steels?

Other than pressing lightly on the sticks??

(I have a Gerber Guardian and I noticed it's a bitch to get a shaving edge)

You very wide and aggressive cutting hones, have them clean and freshly lapped if possible. Jeff Clark has described how to handle the burr problem with steels in general which is of critical importance on the softer steels.
