Hello all!

Love this forum and I love looking at all the knives I wish I could have, but I'm not a big poster on here. Something that I soon would like to change.

Anyways what I have here is an old Camillus Knife with a Marlin Spike that was issued to my dad during his Navy days. When he retired and left the states to reside in the Philippines he passed the knife down to me. Only sad thing about the knife was that is was extremely dull and had probably never been sharpened since the 70's. I'm semi-decent at refining and edge but not so decent at basically starting from scratch when it comes to sharpening. I've tried to sharpen it with no luck.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks and/or advice when it comes to sharpening?? Also to anyone else with this type of Camillus, is this knife supposed to have an edge on one side or both sides (a double bevel i believe its called) of the cutting edge?

Any (kind) comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there....

I get great results with Japanese water stones....
starting with 800 grit stone, next 4000 grit stone and the more stones with different grits you have the better.....

If you cant find or don't want to spend money on water stones then you can use wet/dry sand papers....maybe start with a 600 grit and work your way up to maybe 2000 grit paper....

Last but absolutely not the least!!! is finishing off with a leather strop with some type of compound on it.....this is where the magic happens!

During the process of sharpening the knife...you just need to find the angle of the edge and maintain that angle through out the process.....

Youtube is a good source for learning and absorbing how to sharpen a knife....

hope that helps......

FYI... I am planning on purchasing the exact same knife from ebay.... a wharncliffe knife shape is excellent for EDC and find my self untying bad knots all the time....

enjoy it....
