Just as the subject line states, I am sick and tired of having my character judged by people who don't know me from a hole in the wall. The two people I am referring to know who they are, too. I wanted to eamil them both, but I thought I'd post it here instead.
The first instance is where I asked for a small scrap of steel for a friction folder I am trying to build. As usual, someone has to stick their nose where it doesn't belong and call me a cheapskate. There are a few things I've learned...first is that the best way to learn something is to have someone who knows more about it show you a few things. Second is that to keep costs down, it is to your advantage to simply ask and see if anyone has materials they can give to you for a project. When you're 25 and you are $100,000 in debt because you decided to go into a profession that is dedicated to helping others and the education costs are ridiculously high, you'll do whatever it takes to keep your costs down. Excuse me for living. The nice thing about being open and up front about it is that if no one had any spare materials they wanted to give, then the thread would've died! I wasn't being dishonest, hiding my intentions, or anything else. A lot of folks over at the Shop forum have been super helpful
and things are progressing nicely. It just pisses me off when someone has to ruin an otherwise good thing just because they assume the worst in other people.
The second example of what I am talking about came from another forumite who accused me of trying to simply get a free sheath by doing a big sheath review and write up of our various local makers. Maybe this guy isn't all that bright, but if anyone on Bladeforums knows me for anything, I hope to God it's as a sheathmaker! Do you hinestly think I need to spend 10+ hours and upwards of $30 in shipping to do a sheath review just so I could get a free sheath from another maker??? There are two major things wrong with that logic (or lack thereof). First, I have a stach of Kydex and Concealex in the basement and I could make a sheath for any knife in less than two hours and for a couple dollars. Secondly, not to be cocky, but I think I make some of the best sheaths available, that's the whole reason I started selling them to begin with! I don't need someone else to make me a "free sheath", especially when that "free sheath" would cost upwards of the equivalent of several hundred dollars once you add up my
time and factor that in.
I think what galls me the most about these two incidents is that my character is being attacked by two people I don't even know. I have been a contributing member of Bladeforums on a daily basis for a long time. I have spent hours that I can't even count building a website that is full of pictures and information that promotes other makers, honors people who were members that have passed away, and literally gives away information that can't be found elsewhere. I have helped tons of people with step-by-step iunstructions for making sheaths, when I could keep all this info as "proprietary" and sell it instead. I have sent people free stuff who wanted to try their hands at making sheaths, and I have even made sheaths for people and not charged them. It really pisses me off when someone who knows nothing about what I do looks at one posts and makes a judgment, then attacks me in public for all to see. It really makes them look stupid, but it also does a good job of ruining my day.
Anyway, so that's it. I am sorry if I stepped on people's toes by asking for a favor in one instance and offering a favor in another. To the two people who are responsible for this whole thing, I hope you find something to do with your time other than spending it trying to drag me through the mud. And, most importantly, to the people who are a joy to deal with day in and day out at Bladeforums, thanks for making this such a cool site to visit, and such a great community where one person is free (most of the time) to help another out without suspicious, hateful, petty people trying to bring them down.

The problem is people who don't do the research before they attack. Some people don't even read the entire thread (or just ignore the part that contradicts their statement). From the standpoint of a third party, I find these situations amusing (at best), but if I was the one being defamed I probably would be pi$$ed.

Here on BFC we have a diverse community. We have very intelligent, thoughtful people, but we also have reactionary idiots who like to talk too soon without knowing the whole story.

When I saw your post about the sheath reveiw, I thought that it would be a good idea, because if Chiro75 knows anything, he knows sheaths. When I saw you were looking for a peice of bar stock I thought that was good too, because as a community I know that the makers of this forum would be glad to give you a peice of steel so you could try something new.

The problem is people who don't know (1) who their talking to, and (2) don't know what they're talking about.

Before I get yelled at too, I should include that these are just my OPINIONS.

~Mitch

Mitch, thanks for the encouragement! You have put it very eloquently. What some people just don't get, either, is that some people just LIKE to help others! That's why I have done so many services here that go unpaid for. It's a gift. That's also why I dedicate my life to helping other people live healthier lives. I like to help other people, and when I need help with something I don't hesitate to ask. Unfortunately in this strange American society that also means I am open to attack because "no one does anything without an ulterior motive". Tell that to Bteel, who is busy giving knives away left and right because it makes him feel better. What a great guy! Also, just in case the reader isn't buying the whole morality issue, let's make it a simple economic one:

Cost of homemade sheath = cost of materials + time. Materials will be 7sq. inches of 0.093" ConceAlex, let's say (I', being generous) which is about $1.50 of Concealex + screws, which run me all of about $.15 each. Let's say I use three, so that 45 cents. SO, total cost of materials is $1.95, and that's pushing it. Let's now add in time, which for argument's sake, let's say is an hour on a sheath this size. Since I'd do it instead of watching some stupid TV show, then I consider that to be "free" time, and so total cost of the homemade sheath is $1.95 + one hour of time.
Now, let's add up the costs in the same way for the "free" sheath. Since I won't be using my own materials (although I would've added my own design just for kicks, but let's forget about that part), then it comes down to time factor and shipping costs. Let's say we decide on a knife to use, that means $3.20 postage to the first maker. SO far there are three interested makers, so let's assume there would be five total, plus return shipping to me. That's $3.20 per postage, meaning 6 x $3.20. That's $19.20 assuming five makers will be involved. Now, assume each maker will keep the sheath for a few days. Let's be honest and say each will need at least four days to make the mold and get the fit right. There's a month, easily, between shipping time and the amount the makers need.
Now add 15 minutes each way (30 minute round trip) to the post office the first day and the last day to send and receive the knife, plus today's price in gas. Now add the amount of time, plus gas, it takes to drive to the library and type a review. That'll take five + hours easily. Now add an hour of taking photographs, a roll of film and developing costs, and two hours for scanning/uploading that roll of film. These are mostly day time hours when I could be working. Let's say I was doing a workstudy position at $11 per hour. That's a ****load of money. Good thing I'm not a D.C. or we'd be well into 4 digit figures just for the time spent on this project.
So, clearly you can see what option makes better sense. Oh...you'll also have to add $5 shipping (insured, of course) for the people who win the raffles for these knives. There's another $20 right there, at least, plus more driving time.
Anyway, let's say you think I am doing this review to get a "free sheath". As you can see, that sheath is far from free. The question is, which person is stupid, me or the person who honestly thinks this is a plot to "get something for nothing"??? I'd frankly rather skip 90210 tonight and knock out my own sheath! It was worth a try, though, db. Thanks for keeping me on my toes, I guess.

Chiro, If I had any scrap steel I would send it to you, but I don't. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. I think it might be an awakening if people in here knew what other people are or do!! hehe.

Cobalt, true to the nature of these forums, I have had to turn away several people who want to give me steel! That's great! LIke I said, most of the time people here are very giving because they are simply nice folks. Every now and then you hit a little bump in the road, but it still hurts to get your teeth rattled a little if you know what I mean.

Chiro,

Chill out. Some of these folks simply do not understand the impact of the cold written word into which we cannot effectively attach our inflections to make them more soft or cold. Then again, some folks just talk to be talking and forget what they are saying. As far as a free sheath, IF I thought you really needed one and didn't have the talent to make one (as it sounds from your detractors), I'd make one for you for free. BUT you do have the talent and you asked a simple question. Maybe that's why I give mine away and quite selectively I might add. I don't want to have to put up with the neer-do-wells and soothsayers who criticize just to be controversial. Besides my sheaths don't stand up to the quality I've seen in yours. Keep a cool one and let them rave on!

Well Chiro, I for one have always enjoyed reading your posts and most especially your reviews. Its too bad some people have to be so damn petty, but as Mitch said, with 5000+ members its bound to be a diverse community. Unfortunately 'diverse' also includes some a$$holes as well as many genuinely nice people. I just try to ignore the idiots and learn from the nice people.

Just because I talk to myself does not make me crazy. Now, when I listen to myself, that makes me crazy.

Hey Steve, haven't talked to you in a long time. I'd been lurking for a few months and just came back about a month ago and truth to tell, I've seen too many negative threads out here. What the hell happened to this place? I, too, will stand up for your character. You've always been a forthright, helpful and an all around good guy (and by looking at your site, I think you do make good sheaths, I'll need you to make me one for my Frosts Clipper, if ya don't mind--but that's whenever you're ready). I really don't have anything bad to say about you.

A "cheapskate"? Sorry, I didn't read the thread. To address that topic, I was asking around about 6 months ago if anyone had any small sheets of Kydex for sale. Guess what? Our very own Corduroy GAVE me a piece. He said it was a pleasure to help someone try something new and thought that I shouldn't have even considered buying it from him. That's the sort of community that I joined when I registered and it's this sort of crap that you're dealing w/ that sent me lurking. I don't think it's bad that you were asking around for a piece of scrap steel for one of your projects. Hell, if I had one, I'd give it to you, knowing full well that if I asked for something so dimunitive, someone would be more than willing to do the same for me.

All in all, people that attack others (not just you) on this site are the real idiots here, they not only lack respect for their fellow members, but for this forum as a whole. As for those folks out here who gladly lend a hand, either informationally, material wise, or both, I thank you for your contributions to this COMMUNITY, you included, Chiro. Good luck w/ your friction folder and let me know when you can make me a good, cheap sheath!

Anyone that's read more than one of your posts, or has looked at your website, or had any dealings with you whatso ever, knows that you are as much of an ASSET to this community as anyone. Consider the source and put it past you, for your sake not theirs.

Thrawn, for the time being I am in "retirement" so to speak. I am busy concentrating on patients, so I don't have enough time to do sheaths for people anymore. Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement. Oh, and TANGUS, I know you mean well, but in my experience rule #1 of what NOT to do when someone is p.o.'d is to use the words "calm down" or "chill out". It assumes that the person is out of control, and that usually adds fuel to the fire! Anyway, what's life without some controversy, even when that controversy is coming from someone whose entire point to life is to being a "bigger a-hole" (paraphrased from db's post)?

Phil, good point. The thing that always bothers me most about this sort of crap is that eventually I find myself stooping to the levels that the jerk who makes the comments wants me to be at. POint well taken. No more posts on arguments from me. I always hate when negative threads get started, so I should've just ignored it from the beginning. Anyway, feel free to comment, but you won't hear any more from me!

Hang in there chiro. Things will turn around.
My chiropracter drives a Roll Royce. He's a humanitarian just like you.
It looks like I'm not the only person that noticed that you seem to be trying to score a lot of stuff for free. All panhandlers have their hard luck story but panhandling is panhandling. Some people seem to think it's ok and put money in the pan and it annoys others. I'm one of the others.
If you take that as an attack on your character. Oh well. If you're not too proud to panhandle you shouldn't be upset when people comment on it.

Yeah, I heard you were "retired" for now, but when you step out of it, let me know, ok? No big deal, really, you've got to find some way to pay off those loans, right?
smile.gif
Like everyone else pretty much said, don't sweat the jerks out there, they really don't know you or what kind of a person you are.

Tom, you're not getting on Chiro because he's going to be a Chiropractor are you? How's the back today?
I know you're jerking his chain a little bit, but sometimes just reading a post it's hard to tell how to take it. I know you don't believe that a gift is a handout, because you just gave me a case for my new Easler, and you were very generous with your time at the ECCKS. I learned a lot from you.
Try using the Smiley faces once in a while.
wink.gif

Phil, there are no smileys in Tom's post for a reason. He is one of the two people I mentioned above. Apparently a three inch piece of scrap steel (I'm getting a piece of L6 saw steel for my friction folder...anyone want to calculate the market value for three inches off an old saw?) is a lot for some folks to swallow. Go figure. And, Tom, spare me with the Rolls Royce story. The median salary for a doctor of chiropractic is under $100,000 a year. For one that has graduated within five years it is closer to $30-45K. If you want a $100,000 debt at 3:1 payback:moeny borrowed ratio then perhaps we can talk. I still don't know why you are so sore about that joke I posted in the FOr Sale forum. I can't be blamed if people are going to take it seriously now, can I? And FWIW, the only knife I am getting from that "Free" deal is a swiss army knife with a little flashlight in it. And, not that it's any of your business, but I actually paid $20 for it from the person who is giving it to me for "free". Good deal, huh? I suppose you're also going to tell everyone that you've never asked someone to help out with a project, eh? Or that you've never borrowed anything from anyone and not paid back the depreciation that resulted from your using it? I think it would be GREAT to see a finished, usable tool created by a scrap that collecting rust in a bin of steel I got from recycled saw blades for free. That would be so cool. I guess that's why someone is seinding me the steel, isn't it? Oh well. Some people...

Oh, one other thing, Tom. Since db is apparently not going to comment how hundreds of dollars qualifies as a "free" sheath more than one that would cost me $1.95, then maybe you can! Again, I would love for someone to explain to me how this sheath even comes close to being "free"! GO for it, Tom. No? Maybe db? Probably not. Oh well. Also, do you really think I would get into being a doctor to make money? That's the crappiest way to make money I can think of. The only people who comment on how "greedy" doctors of any type are the ones who have no understanding of the piles of crap doctors have to go through in their education, what type of hours they put in, and what type of burden they assume when a patient trusts them with their welfare and that of their family. No amount of maney pays for that, Tom, and I resent your, again, ignorant statements that suggest otherwise. Maybe you should make the same implication to Dr. Welch that you did about me and try to justify that. While I'm at it (and look, here I am posting comments right after I said I wouldn't....Tom tends to bring out the worst in me...), why don't you tell me what profits I gained from spending dozens and hours, as well as money educating myself, to construct the following pages that are free to anyone:

And the list goes on.... go ahead, Tom. PLease explain for everyone all the profits I gleaned from unsuspecting Forumites due to these webpages, which I guess you'll also say were instantaneous to make! Greedy ol' Steve. What a mean guy! Am I defensive? Yep. Like I said, don't even think you can insult me without me coming back at you. I guess that's what three years in my neighborhood (S.O.L. = South of Locust) has taught me.

Chiro, if you are taking offense to Tangus's obvious attempt to be helpful and smooth things over a bit then, by your definition, maybe you should "chill out"

I found that most people think other people think like them.Maybe that explains their actions.

Chiro,

To let you know what I think of some of the responses you got, and we have never corresponded that I know of, I just emailed you asking you what you thought of building a sheath for a knife of mine. I got the jist of your being "retired" but thought I would just ask anyway to let you know that your reputation has certainly not been damaged by the naysayers.

Kisu, I didn't take offense to what TANGUS wrote! That's what the words "I know you have good intentions mean". This is getting ridiculous. All I'm saying is that people who are irritated, as a general group, don't like to be told that they are out of control. If I were out of control, I wouldn't be sitting here typing here and on other threads as I usually do. I also wouldn't let myself get riled up before seeing a patient, which I have to do in about an hour. I ma perfectly calm. I meant that as a comment in general. You wouldn't believe the fights I have seen escalate after one person told the other person to "calm down", "relax" or "chill out"! It just isn't the right thing to say most of the time. ANyway, re-read that post and you'll see that I wasn't angry at tangus at all. I was giving my own word of advice. I should just delete this whole stupid thread, but apparently you can't do that...
