My 03 HD 4x4 only has 14000 miles on it and I'm on my second set of tires. The truck came with a set of 245/75R-16's on it and I swapped them in on a set of 285/75R-16 Maxxis Buckshot Mudders at 7500 miles. The Buckshots are wearing pretty bad and I'm needing a new set. I priced a new set of BFG AT KO's at $166 each, and a few others. What are your preferences, and what kind of mileage did you get out of them?

I've used BFG AT's on all my 4x4s (trucks & SUVs) with great results. I've gotten great wear from them... typically 80k miles. They also have very tough side walls, which is a plus when running offroad. Wouldn't put anything else under my rigs.

Mate, You're going to get a bunch of tire recommendations that will all be
personal use preferances NONE of them will be able to fit YOUR driving
habits or needs. The correct tire for YOUR use will be best determined by
how/where you drive. Basicly if you stick with name brand tires and take
care of them they will last you better. NO tire will take abuse longterm so
mindful of the care you give them.

Please before you buy tires check out the Bridgestone Revo's,they are a great tire.

I have a set of Cooper Discoverer S/T 265/75/R16's on my Z71 now and have about 25k miles of them, I look to get another 15-20K out of them. I am very pleased with them. I go most places without locking in that my bro-in-law gets his D-max stuck.

I will probably go with the either the L/T or A/T next time, just because I dont really need anything as aggressive as the S/T's are, I can lock it down and get where I need to.

I believe they do come in heavy load ranges, there are several F-250 running around here with them.

I've got some friends that have had good luck with BF Goodrich Mud Terrains. Seem to get pretty good wear although I don't know how many miles they really put on them. They have a tread pattern that seems to be a good compromise for on and off road driving.

One thing I can definitely say is don't buy Generals. Thats what came on my dad's F350 and they were pathetic. At first they were cupping and wore so bad on the front end that it wouldn't stay aligned. Had an outfit that works on semi's put shims in after the dealer gave up. That got the wear straighened out so that it seemd like they were doing really well, until the tread starting flying off. Tire had clean sidewalls and over a half inch of grooves left and a 2 ft long chunk of tread and belts flew off on the interstate while we were pulling a horsetrailer :barf:

Thanks for the replies guys. I was really happy with the last set of Buckshots that I had on my Z71 and they had 30000 miles on them with plenty of tread left when I sold the truck. I don't know why these wore so bad on my HD, but I went ahead and ordered four more Buckshots today. Since only two of my tires are worn really bad I will save the other two and keep them for spares.

I did check out the Revo's and they look really good. Maybe next time.

Is this a heavier truck? The Z71 was a half ton, is this a 3/4 ton? Deisel?
Those buckshots are probably a low load rating, Bet they're a D or below. If your going to be hauling a lot of stuff, or especially if you've got a deisel which puts a lot heavier load over your front wheels all the time, you've got to step up to the heaviest load rating you can, all of our trucks have tires rated E.
The problem could be totally different, but I have known more than one person have this happen too them.
Also might be worth finding a reputable place that works on heavy trucks and have them check alignment and put shims in. Had alignment problems on my dad's crew cab dually and the dealer just wasn't getting it. Bee Line (mainly work on semis) had it straight as an arrow the first time and its stayed that way. Tire wear is a ton better.
