Titan Defender Lightweight vs Titan Worker

Yeah, still trying to decide. The Defender Lightweight has a 4 mm N690BO blade - the indeterminate blade of the Titan Worker is of 440C, not as premium as the Bohler, in my book. The Ti liners look similar - are they the same thickness? My local pusher has a Worker - and it is nice, but I like the N690BO steel - and the Titan Defender Lighweight has it - and is ~$25 less, delivered, than the Worker. Any help would be appreciated. The Worker's weight, blade thickness, and the Ti liner thickness for both would be appreciated. Thanks!

PS If anyone has a Haddock to compare to one of the pair, fit & QC wise, I'd appreciate it.

Stainz, I don't have the Worker but have the Lightweight Defender. While my Titan Defender was stolen, my Lightweight wasn't. I like the full green canvas micarta scales and the liners are the same thickness on both Defenders, .100" thick. The literature says they are .080" thick, but not so as I measured with a calipher several times, and several spots, and got .100" thick readings. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the Workers have the same thickness liners, but I do not know for sure. I do know the Defenders have thumbstuds to open the blade with, but the Workers look to have only the thumbnail slit to open the blade with. The Defenders are said to have 4mm thick blades, but in actual measurement they are .140", so more like 3.5mm thick. One last thing between the Lightweight Defender and the Worker are the listed weights; the Lightweight Defender weighs in at 5.3 ounces, just as the info says. Every place I read for the Worker says they weigh 3.5 ounces. It may not mean that much to you, but I MUCH rather have the heavier weight for the solid feel it gives to the knife. I'm sorta OCD about the measurements, especially thickness and weight!:)

The Lightweight Defender, out of the box, sent hairs flying. I mean they were popping off like popcorn! For me that is sharp enough for what I want a blade to be and to do.

Knowing your preference for knives, from reading your posts, I would say that you will like the Defender. I'/s a bulldog of a knife!

I planning on replacing my Titan Defender this Christmas!:D

The only thing I disliked about mine is the clip, but that can be easily remedied I think.

I remove clips and stow them in the box - I like 'pocket' knives!

The Worker is only 3.5 oz? Wow! The Lightweight Defender is 5.3 oz and the Defender is 5.9 oz - pretty convincing argument for a lightweight Defender. I have one Ti-lined Benchmade to look at before I order the Lightweight Defender.

While I love my Tree Brand 'classics', my Haddock just seems overpriced for the poor QC - and not just the state of sharpness. The backside of the pivot screw has an uneven perimeter, indicating the pivot shank hole and the pivot screw countersink for the pivot screw head are not concentric - pretty obvious QC failure. How is the fit & finish of the lightweight Defender? The local Worker looks pretty nice. I appreciate your help!

Thanks.

The Lightweight Defender had good fit/finish. The green canvas micarta scales fit the handles with no gaps, or overhang, or underhang. Blade is perfectly centered, finish on the blade is a stonewash and well done. The liners are either stonewashed, or blasted, I can't remember without the knife in front of me. Lockup was the way I prefer it, about half to 3/4's of the liner contacted the blade to establish lockup, so that gives you anywhere between .050" to .075", a range most linerlocks fall between. I did do the SPINE TAP on it, that consists of 5 medium taps to the back of the blade, in rapid succession, to see it the lock gave away. All the lock did was move a mite, and I mean a mite, to the right, further enhancing the lockup. Let us know how yours is when you get it.

Btw, what BM are you looking at? I actually have my large Bone Collector, #150201, in my pocket today!:)

I have the same BC - love it! I do carry the BM 755 MPR as an EDC 98% of the time - often a Boker TB Classic - or the Haddock - as well. I had the 755, an instant like here, for a while when I bought the Haddock - and the 755 had spoiled me - more knife - much more - even Bohler steel M390 steel. Excellent build - and cheaper than the great deal I got on the Haddock. I was disappointed with the quality of the Haddock, although it took a great edge - and is relatively smooth & tight - now.

I have my eyes out for a BM 440 & 480 today, although they are smallish 'Gent's knives' in comparison to the Defender series. I already have two BM Snody Ti-framelock goodies, the 425 & 426, bought earlier this year on closeout (old stock). They have Ti liners - one is a big 'Wharncliffe', the other a modified drop point. Great material/lockup/centering/assembly. There is something alluring about that Titan Lightweight Defender, however... and I like it's Bohler steel better than I do 154CM, although I prefer S30V as my first choice.

We 'want' for so many reasons. My wife has me a goodie hidden away, for example. First, I really like M4 as a knife steel. My Christmas goodie is a BM 171 Chopper of such metal. Think of it as a Pry-Mate... on serious steroids. My Pry-Mate, nicely made/great QC, has seen more use already than that 171 will likely ever see... unless I decide to lay waste to my backyard's overgrowth. She 'thought' I wanted it! Gotta slow down on knife purchases - the Titan Light Defender may be it for a long while.
