Sorry if this is a repetitive question, I could not find it in archives.

Is the 110 model with the chisel-grind titanium coating now out of production? I do want to use a 110 in a sheath this summer.

I have used it sparingly, and in fact have now put it away while a BG-42 custom is being made. However, I've reached a point in my collecting where I want to use everything, even the 'drawer queens.' I like the more rounded bolsters, and with a touch of Nevr-Dull, the brass really sparkles, leaving no orange-peal type finish. I mean, how can I leave a knife like that behind real often?

However, other than mine, I've never seen one.

Yes, they have stopped making the IonFusion blades as far as I am aware. I guess there was never enough interest in general, even thogh the technology behind it is very good.

Couple years back I had a 560 that I had one of those blades put into, that thing could cut! I also know that they offered IonFusion blades on a number of models available through various retail stores and catalogs.

I have looked, and there are still some available through online stores.

do you find that the ionfusion holds an edge longer than a normal blade? also, how difficult is it to sharpen?

IonFusion will hold an edge longer because the coating is around 80RC, and the blade steel is 58RC I believe. With the chisel grind, the blade steel will wear away first, thus sharpening the blade. Buck ran test and said that the edge should last about 2-3 times as long.

The chisel grind should sharpen the same as any other chisel grind I believe.

As Mike said, make sure you only sharpen the front side of the ionfused blade. The insures that the coating on the back continues to the very edge which is why they stay sharper longer.

Up until they revamped PCKS, they offered several different colors of the ionfused 110 blades. It may be worth talking to Joe Houser to see if any of those blades are still laying around. Joe, and the rest of Buck's Customer Service staff always to their best to help in any way they can. It can't hurt to ask!!

Mine has only been sharpened once, if 'sharpened' is the right word. Mine had been bouncing around in a salesman's sample case, and when it looked shop-worn, he sold it to me. From the horrible shape it APPEARED to be in, I was going to make a 'user' out of it. First, I got out the Nevr-Dull just to clean it.

However, the more I cleaned it, the more I saw it had no cosmetic marks. It fact, after 30 minutes of polishing I feared that the saleman would want it back. I then checked the edge with a lighted loupe.

The edge was very uniform, but there was a small 'M' shaped divot on the edge about 3/4's of an inch from the pivot. That divot is what got out the Edge-Pro.

Yikes! A light touch up and a polish got the bevel gleaming! To be sure, that titanium edge cut like a chainsaw! So good in fact that it has NEVER been re-sharpened!

My question stemmed considering future use. I'm getting a new Harley this summer, and a Buck 110 in a black sheath is the only knife to carry for that purpose. But it also means rides in the rain, sun, dust, repair jobs and the usual life of a biker. I carried a Buck 110 through my entire club life. But, look at it this way, I never had to replace that one. In fact, I gave it away, and the knife got a SECOND life.

It's clear the knife is tough, and the BG-42 is coming. Perhaps they will both see some duty. I have no qualms about either.

I have three Pete's custom 110's with the ionfusion coating, I didn'tknow it was no longer available from the custom shop - if I had seen that coming I might have ordered another one or two (Hey Joe, any blades left?)

The knives have been extremely tough, and the blades hold their edge. The only time I managed to hurt one was when I was stuck on a camping trip, and used the edge to rip open a can of chicken. It's a great knife, but a poor can opener.

Peace,

Al

Folsom,

Can opener? Ouch!

I'm not that hard on my toys. Perhaps I'm finding my second childhood. To me, a Dyna-Glide is a Harley. It's a seat and an engine.

And while I have Striders and Microtechs, when I ride I want the traditional knife. But more than just an ornament, this knife has to live a life in the outdoors, and if repairs have to made, or light camp work done, then the knife has to perform.

When I went to pick up the 110, I din't know it was an IonFusion model. In fact, I had only seen pictures, and I didn't know it was in the chisel grind format. The price was right.

However, it does seem a shame to subject a model, only made for one year, to several riding seasons of Wisconsin weather. Whatever is on my belt is going to have to survive to that unexpected Wisconsin downpour. We say, "If you don't like Wisconsin weather, wait ten minutes." A clear day can turn into a tornado with driving rain; it happened to me.

:thumbdn:  I've got two good ionfusion preformers and one the ionfusion coating started coming off on. I use the two heavily on wild hogs (there is no tougher hide, hair, or fur) they where the only knives I had that could make it through cleaning a 500 lb hog. I think the coating is supposed to keep the knife sharper 5 times longer than regular. Be careful though, Buck doesn't warranty the coating! Even though the same warranty paperwork comes in the box.

Texou812,

in the past 5 minutes this is the fourth time I have heard about your warrnaty woes. You dedicated a thread to it, so stop bitching and whining in all the other ones.

Stu

When I think of uses for a knife used by a Harley rider, I think of a screwdriver, chisel, pry bar, ect.
I have seen that the standard design of edge grind will perform better under those kinds of abuses. The chisel grind can be a little thinner sometimes so too much contact with hard objects will result in chips. The knife is awesome for slicing. We field tested it on quite a few wild hogs and it did wonders.

Tex, please see my response to your issue in the thread you started. Thanks,

I would really like to be able to try out one of these knives. I missed out on the whole thing. I tried having a dealer special order one, and the distributor was out of stock.

It would be nice to know how such a blade compares to ATS34, etc.

Hey cut me some slack stu, I'm a first timer and was investigating anything and everything I could find on ionfusion and blade coating

It's really not a great idea to piggy-back on someone else's thread -- especially an old thread -- look at the original post's date! "The Tourist" has been long gone from Bladeforums. :D

You'll get the hang of it and I'm sure Joe will take care of the problem, anyway.
